Breakfast before I left! Was home about 11.30...in time for the footy. Met some really nice people lineside...which is a great part of the hobby IMO.

Thank you Alan for the positive words and to say Riley's babies can put on a good show is a understatement.....

44871 looks great on this shot and the others we've seen already. Not bad considering it was off its wheels at Grosmont as recently as Wednesday! Another storming performance both before and during the event from Mr Riley and his crew & WCRC. Great stuff - thanks to them & all for submitting the photos and videos for the rest of us armchair spectators to enjoy. :)

Anybody see Digger Dawn by the lineside today? I think she'd have been impressed with the locos running smokebox first. ;)

Having been on for part of the return and talking to the stewards, I can verify that there were some comments about FS not being there but all understood when the reason was explained.

So who (a) shunts the Support Coach (b) moves the stock from the platform to allow scheduled services to pass (c) returns the stock to the platform at the appropriate time sand keeps the whole trainset nicely warmed throughout whilst there is no steam locomotive attached. Of course you may be a hardy soul - but many passengers aren't and they appreciate the heat from the "supporting" diesel.

    a) and b) can be done by the steam loco itself as has happened on steam tours I've made to the city.

Yes but as has been said, at the moment Carlisle is busier than normal with Pendolinos terminating there occupying a platform for long periods and the Dumfries/Kilmarnock/Glasgow Voyager taking another platform. So the empty stock had to be moved out quickly as the steam had to use the same line to get out of the station as well. A look at RTT will give you an idea of what's going on at the moment.

From an operational point of view having a diesel on the back makes perfect sense. For shunting, air, ETH and assistance in the event of failure. Having to steam heat a long train like that and having our air pumps running all day adds up to increased coal and water consumption. Diesel on the back negates this.

I would be the first to rant about the unnecessary use of a diesel but it looks to me that today was a necessary operational matter. And I say again. If you are going to run a Black 5 in steam from Castleton to Manchester and then work it to Hellifield via the long route, taking over three and a half hours, plus heat the train, then I reckon you are cutting things fine on water, never mind the need to have a diesel to shunt the train quickly at Carlisle.

So let's be fair to those who call these things. Add to that what looked to me like a flawless performance (again) from Ian Riley's finest and surely there's not much to feel disgruntled about?

Not sure if I like the reason behind this comment Ralph as it was legal and behind Network rail fencing with photos to prove the same !!!!

Strange that DBS manage by and large without boxes on the back.

I was talking to Mick at Carlisle and he had a video with him of what I assumed was a compilation of last year's trips where he was driving. When I saw your clip later with the whistle on approach I obviously mistakenly put 2 & 2 together thinking it was your video and he knew where you would be on the return. Sorry for the error, also your position taking that clip was never an issue for me.

Thanks Ralph ,sorry but I must have misunderstood your comment . I was actually standing away from the camera to take a photo as they passed me so I assumed at the time that Mick whistled at the Pendo .
