Heritage Painting have always seemed to manage well enough in Baron Street shed before. Down to IRE and the NRM where & when it ultimately happens though

So what exactly is light steam? ;) Is there less of it?

    light steam = light smoke
    dark steam = dark smoke

    :)

    it could also be

    heavy steam = cancer
light steam = low cholesterol, low sodium, low sugar, high fibre, 5 a day super healthy diet smoke ?

or maybe I've been to too many diet sessions.

Light steam is normally with just enough steam on the gauge to atomise oil for lubrication but i have seen locos in "light "steam ;) being hauled by a deisel that were anything but, that deisel found its self being pushed that was when there was a steam ban on 3rd rail the noise from the chimneys of both engines kind of gave the game away. generally the regulator would be just cracked to allow enough steam into the cylinders to cushion the valves
This was back when things did go chuf at night on the SW division :) we had someone in the know, and woking station at 2 in the morning was rather quite where officialdom was concerned, and i think the deisel driver was a former steam driver .
