I well remember (aged around eight) when the SR-N1 came out. Us kids thought it was amazing and quite a few of us had the Corgi version!

Hovertravel are investing in 2 brand new craft, the first of which took to the water for the first time this week. Alas not built on the Isle of Wight but not too far away in Southampton. Hovertravel obviously can see a long term future in cross Solent hovercraft services.

 

Alas...not up North!

The US Marines see a point in having hovercrafts, with their old hovercraft being replaced with 73 new hovercraft.

That route is unique, one of the most expensive in the world by mile, Hovertravel fairs work out at about £1 per minute!!!

 

Its a limited military platform, 73 is a small number - bit specialised. Fair weather only, needs certain terrain to land, and while in use is considered a turkey shoot by the defenders. And Stealthy they aint.

USMC or the Royals? The royals - Yes they have a whole 4 apparently. Check out how many landing craft No1 assault group RM have.

 

At a pound a minute? you bet they are.

 

What's numbers got to do with it? The Marines are a specialised force and use specialised transport where and when needed. Horses for courses.

But only 60p dearer for a day return than the Wightlink catamaran so obviously enough people are prepared to pay that extra 60p for a quicker journey.
