Premium quality should always take priority for turns like the WCME. An experienced coal merchant is able to hazard a good guess as to quality and fitness for purpose of a batch. .

She had a bad run to Newcastle a while ago that was blamed on bad coal too. At least this time she managed to complete the trip. As Ralph says, it's unusual to see her clagging like that. Stunning image from jsm8b though.

 

So now you are an expert mainline fireman Mr Maxim?.....how can you as an armchair expert differentiate between poor coal or indifferent firing techniques?

my point therefore was bad coal makes any fireman's job more difficult?
