Just curious, but why are you "disappointed" that this is a DBS operation?

In my experience,DBS normally put up a first class job,and crucially(for me anyway!) they do not normally have assistance on the back, although I accept for this trip, for various reasons, this might not be the case.

I suppose,as others have said, the main thing is that whatever happens with ORR and WCRC,this trip will operate.

errr, Sorry to be a bit pedantic, but even though some people aren't too happy about the livery, shouldn't the thread title be 60103 KX-York?

I suspect the poster refers to pre-nationalisation numbers for some current BR-liveried locomotives in the same way I usually use BR numbers, where appropriate, for locomotives currently in their pre-nationalisation guise. All a matter of personal preference.

At least there is only one hill between KX and York so the box will not have to do much pushing

A lot of confusion/grief/pedantry could be avoided by using the locos name, or did that change as well with the numerous liveries????

Obviously someone who thinks Kings Cross platform end - Finsbury Park is on the level - given that northbound trains go downhill as they enter Gasworks Tunnel ! Perhaps he needs to view the Ladykillers for a re-assessment of his statement.

But it hasn't carried the nameplates since returning to steam so, as could be argued by irritating pedants, this is wrong too. As is the TOPS number 98872 :)

This loco is so famous we all know most of its possible identities. So please use them all - indiscriminately.

To clarify. Not disappointed that this operation will be DBS; but disappointing for WCRC, having this special job being offered to another TOC by the NRM, due to current situation.

We all know this special charter will be a really prestigious event, have considerable media coverage, and interest from the general public.

From a personal perspective, it would have been suitable recognition for the 15 years plus service that WCRC has given, and continue to give, operating steam hauled charter trains.

Apologies, I am going off thread here…

What rolling stock will be used for the train? I guessing it will be the blood and custard stock?

But it would be something special if NRM had considered using Pullman stock, from the WCRC Spirit of the Lakes set, or hire the Belmond set. Now that would add sparkle to the adventure.

Additionally, I seem to think the almost 8 miles of roughly 1 in 200, from Alexandra Palace to Potters Bar, was never classed as a piece of cake with the loco having had only 4miles 77 chains to 'warm-through' after starting at KX. I realise there's a short downhill section [1/2 mile?] from Hornsey to Ally Pally but momentum gained there still has to be maintained.
Anyway, on the day let's hope FS has the proverbial towering inferno of well burnt-through coal to ensure the job's a good 'un!

Think you'll find thats not the case at all, and they have a diesel on the back as often and for the same reasons that WCR do.

Well MrK, I am sure you see a lot more of them than I do so I hesitate to disagree with you!

However, surely its the case that the vast majority of the Torbays and the UKR/A1Trust Tornado trips have run without assistance. The Belmonds with 35028(or Tornado now)also often do so. Obviously,in "leaf-fall time" and during fire risk season that won't be the case.

I would still say that you have a much better chance of no diesel on a DBS operated trip, whereas a WCRC train without one (particularly anywhere in the south)seems to be becoming increasingly rare now.

Luckily, if WCR dont survive this threat, I shall be perfectly placed to see most of DBS's steam efforts, which is likely to be most of the steam, running in the UK! I am dusting off my plan to rent filming plots along the line. Packaged and guided tours - that kind of thing. The dog and I know every inch of the Surrey Hills run!

Indeed, and I have much enjoyed your footage posted here. I wonder what the forecast for Saturday is,probably not as nice as today! RTT seems to indicate Tornado will run on the Surrey Hills without assistance hopefully.

As DBS are currently only operating 24 Steam jobs this year, the odds would be quite good LOL
