The "Gresley knock" was was well known in the old days and quite distinctive for those of us who were privileged to stand on Harringay Station watching a GN express getting into its stride. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

Must say she sounds as good as ever, and the sight of her easily taking that load on the test run boads well for the ecml!

Lets face it, she was a bag of spanners for years, at last she has been well and truly bottomed, she's never sounded as good since her last shopping at the Plant.
Well done to the Lancastrian boys, you done good...

I don't hear a knock at least in a mechanical sense, one beat seems sharper or louder than the others which gives the illusion of the knock

Three cylinder locos should sound off beat, due to the different lengths of the exhaust pipes from valves to blastpipe.

Nah, being a proper train spotter, you should know that it's 'cos the front driving wheels are a different diameter to the middle ones. Jeez, some people.....

So a given volume of steam takes exactly the same time to exit from the exhaust ports and then exit from the blastpipe tip regardless of any variation in the exhaust tract. Anyone believe this? And further it will do so with identical pressure drop.

As you say, a given volume of steam will take longer to travel through a longer pipe.
But laws of physics don't apply in a silly argument

Superb David, looks like a really good day out despite the gloom.. The sound capture is excellent - especially the slip!! Many thanks for sharing.

    Cheers,

    Alan

Many thanks Alan, shame it wasn't on Wednesday given the weather, but perhaps that would have been asking for a little too much! Very pleasing to see her back on the big railway.

I would not go as far as "silly argument" but it is remarkable how views stick in spite of good reason for them not to.

Let's take exhaust steam at 100 m/sec and a pipe 1 m longer, the difference would be 1/100 sec. Is your hearing that good?
    Kind regards

Still showing as routed south from Carlisle on the S&C tomorrow, will it be open? IF not, when will a new path have to be booked by?

Busy day tomorrow, is it not due in York by the end of the day?

Re the whistle. Sounded a typical LNER high pitched (french) screamer. Chime whistles came with later locos
