Excellent tour. From the amount of coal deposited in coach H it was a good job the white table clothes were at the rear of the train and the train more enjoyable for that.

Ah. The diesel business. Well there is a world of difference between the two scenarios.
Scenario 1. An overloaded Bulleid light Pacific Class 7 with the equiv of 14/15 coaches trying to eek out a tender of coal on a run to York and getting help from time to time.
Scenario 2. The same load with a Class 5 plus a Class 5+ and a specific instruction from on high that the DL is to provide ETH and nothing else when it is discovered that the steam heat is faulty.

    Chalk and cheese.

Are you deliberately missing the point? This has nothing to do with "the diesel business." I posed the question as to who had done the right thing, VT to cancel its Valentine run or RTC to run theirs? You said VT did the right thing by cancelling and then went on a bit of a rant about how often you'd been "bitten" by RTC. Given all that, I was genuinely surprised to see you make a booking on this trip.

Looks to have been a very good day out compared to what it might have been. But although both steam locos were obviously working well, there isn't much point in quoting speeds with a live 47 attached. Why do WCR have difficulty ensuring the steam heating works consistently?

No I suppose not when people like you are sure that the diesel is always going to assist. I will probably see one of the drivers on Wednesday and will check on this, but will even their assurance to me satisfy you???

I am a steam purist but I do have the benefit of having been told exactly what instructions were given in this case over the diesel. It was a necessary additional load that kept the people in First Class (who were at the back all day, by the way) warm. My understanding is that this was a specific request by ND. It's his trip so it's his prerogative. With the available power up front there was absolutely no need for the diesel to be in drive, which it was not. So I have no problem in giving speeds as genuine.

Why WCRC cannot supply a train with working steam heat throughout its length is, I agree, another matter. But we have been there many times.

No, I am not sure that the diesel is always going to assist. I don't know one way or another. That's the point. There have been many videos posted of many trips that show that despite assurances to the contrary an attached diesel is working.

In this case, it was clearly a good run with steam but like the last Tin Bath in November, (which I was on) the steam heating was deficient. I think it was the same stock. Unfortunate that this led to the diesel.

Just seen the images on another forum of a 12" sliver of concrete embedded in the fireman's side front facing window of the 5.
No comments seen as to whether this was vandalism or something that had just become detached from somewhere lineside.

Hope the crew are unscathed by this.

44871 and 45699 approaching Chinley, seen from the top of Eccles Pike. It was bloody cold up there in the wind! The missus wasn't particularly happy either, I took her away for a romantic weekend in the Peak District for Valentine's Day, and managed to drag her to the top of a hill to see a railtour. :p

Despite the drama surrounding the timings, it was another good day out. Knackering due to an 04:00 rise at York, but good. Highlight for me was the potter through the centre of Manchester- when was the last time steam did this?- to Ashburys, which was one of the required bits of mileage that day. Thankfully, there seemed to be plenty of slack in the timetable after Sheffield, so as previously mentioned, the hour deficit had substantially vanished on the Mirfield side of Wakefield. After the sometimes frought watch-checking before Sheffield (managed a pint and a half in the Tap, which was surprisingly empty due to the inability to gauge when the whistles would sound to re-embark), this made for a happy bunny, as I had made the cardinal sin of purchasing an advanced ticket from Manchester Piccadilly at 19:45 that evening. I didn't relish the prospect of an £18 single when the hour deficit would mean that I'd miss the last possible connection with this service...

The climb of Copy Pit was quite spectacular, although a few of us noted that 45699 was being held back a bit until later in the climb- it did lose its footing a couple of times after Hall Royd Jct. In spite of what I have said in previous posts in this thread, providing there's a few more odd corners of Lancashire, Yorkshire and maybe even (one day) Cheshire thrown into the basic itinerary, I'd probably be happy to do it all again.

Although you can never be 100% certain, the shape of the chunk makes me inclined to say that it either fell from a bridge as a result of concrete cancer, or some brick pointing has been dislodged somewhere by the chimney blast. I don't recall seing this at Brighouse, and definitely not at Sheffield.
