I was going to wait until she was doing tours down South to see her but I'm thinking about going up over Easter to see the Stunts, Speed and Style exhibition with the Stirling Single, 990 Henry Oakley, 60103 and KOYLI lined up together.

Yes, only a short bit, but it ws good to see the support crew getting some air time, remember that if it wasnt for support crews everywhere, there would be no mainline steam, so can we all say a vey heart felt thank you to all the guys, and girls who get up at unearthly o clock to rake out, prepare, oil up and look after what are bits of our history

One thing I'm struck by is how effective the smoke deflectors apparently are; take a look at some photos of the loco towards the end of the run, and there's a fairly tight wedge of soot behind the chimney, narrowing down to the width of the banjo dome. Very little seems to be going towards the cab windows.

Damn right, Mr Spamcan has caught a wonderful pic there. Fingers crossed that they get a trouble free run today, then we can settle down and enjoy great machine.
There were people who said/were saying it should have been scrapped/stuffed and mounted etc.....................look at it now.

Well stated Oldriver, that is exactly what the German style smoke deflectors were fitted for, to assist better visibility for the driver therefore safer driving. Not just to spoil the beautiful lines of a superb looking express locomotive as most people seem to think about them.

Froth, what planet are you living on. The trip has been blighted by mindless photographers and for the passengers on the train some of that special feeling has been taken away.

Then sadly you cannot see beyond the inevitable problems that we were going to get on this day that simply delayed the arrival at York and nothing more.

This thread has now almost run its course. It has catalogued the overhaul together with all the many problems along the way but also the determination of the NRM, Ian Riley and staff to see it through. And this they have done in a manner that simply has to be applauded and with all the fanfare that Flying Scotsman deserved today.

Look at the news tonight. I can bet it will be all about the loco and the bit that seems to have taken away 'that special feeling' for you will be lost in the interviews, the images and the spectacle.

Super video BUT is that helicopter from BBC News in breach of regulations - or is it simply the perspective from the video position ??

Do you really need to find something to pick on? If it was "in breach" (which is impossible to measure from a video), what were you going to do about it?

I think it's a bit unfair to accuse Fred of looking for something to 'pick on'. The WCRC situation has allegedly come about because of a cavalier attitude to safety, an attitude that seems to have come very close to causing a catastrophic accident at Wootton Bassett. I think Fred's question should be encouraged, not condemned. And I speak as someone holding a PPL.
