It might be something to do with the S15 due to appear in 506 in War time Black.

Question did S15s or any other surviving loco carry Southern Black lined in green?

I understand that the current management are of the opinion that Joe and Josepine Public like to see a green loco because "that is the colour steam engines should be painted"
30925 in BR Green and 850 in wartime black would be different. Actually, I would love a loco in unlined black with British Railways in full on the tender

I think Nellie in early BR livery of Malachite with large British Railways on the tender would be an excellent compromise :)

Might apply to the S15's, but I don't think we've got anything else that would authentically fit the bill.............. and boy am I looking forward to the first of them coming back! :)

    Dave,

I don't mind it being repainted in its current livery again. Just turn the loco round to face out of Alresford.

Without the smoke deflectors, Cheltenham could be painted blue with a number 2 on the tender.

Not MHR, but I think the C Class on the Bluebell was painted black, lined in green, from 1925. On the MHR, I think both E499 and E506 could legitimately carry that livery: the first Southern Livery for the S15s was lined black but they went to passenger green quite quickly.

    Only in your dreams!

Something tells me, that is NOT a livery the NRM would agree to........ ;)

DD, Nellie would look fetching in this livery, Malchite with Large British Railways with the Cab No 30850 which lasted until January 1951.

499 and 506 definitely did circa 1925-1930. I wouldn't be surprised if the Bluebell's O1 and C did, but I think @Jamessquared might have a fit if that was seriously suggested (and I would agree with him).

Strictly speaking, 506 in her likely form (U1 chimney, Urie tender) can only be presented as 30506 unless somebody steals the tender from the T9. I hope nobody loves wartime black that much. Give her a stovepipe and she can definitely have olive green and possibly lined black, but the crews may not thank you for the effect on steaming.

Since 499 is going to appear with a stovepipe chimney and the very handsome Urie smokebox door (why was this ever replaced?), LSWR goods green or SR lined black are options, possibly olive green. LSWR livery is apparently the plan; since she'll almost certainly be the only active loco in any LSWR livery, and on an LSWR line, I hope she keeps it for a long time. I need to give the Urie group some money...

I never thought I was a particularly big fan of malachite green, in fact I'm not. I don't object to black either, I find 30120 wonderfully elegant. But I think 850 has fantastic presence in her current livery, that a more sombre colour just doesn't give to the relatively restrained Lord Nelsons. Oh, and Schools need to be green. Pick one of four.

Sorry, paint pedantry over. I'll try not to let it happen again.

Thanks Tom good knowledge, out of interest has any loco carried this livery in preservation? If not it must be one of the rare ones and worthy of my vote for a future Bluebell C class livery.

as she lasted in this livery until 1951 i take it the Lord Nelson Class locomotives were never painted in BR Blue?
