Whilst looking for something else, I was surprised to come across an exemption to allow the B12 to operate between Sheringham and Cromer without TPWS. Has this been put into practice? I don't think that this has been mentioned before on here but I could be wrong. http://orr.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf...lation-3-exemption-certificate-2014-11-11.pdf

I suppose with the eventual depature of 76084, it makes sense to try to run the B12 on the Cromer services.

From what I remember from Joint Line. When the B12 was overhauled the work was deliberately done to main line standards. I'd love to see her standing at Norwich Thorpe...but that would negate the point of the equipment derogation we've just been talking about

Just came upon this post on The Guardian 'comment is free' regarding the furore over the dropping of the duck at the foot of SNG's statue

'When my mother was a girl her father [the architect of Shell-Mex House] would rent a house on the east coast for the summer, I suspect at Southwold. The house next door belonged or was also rented by Sir Nigel and the whole family would turn up in a company train drawn by the eponymous Sir Nigel Gresley loco.
Knowing this I never thought that personalised number plates cut the mustard'

According to The Gresley Society it was Sheringham not Southwold. Is it true he would arrive at Sheringham behind said A4, or a miss-recollection/embellishment? Ironic given the loco couldn't get there by rail in 2014 due to the last minute recollection of bridge weight restrictions by Network Rail. I'd be surprised if A4s made it onto the M&GN, still it is more likely than the narrow gauge Southwold Railway.

    Thanks for the updates.

"A Pway trolley and specially adapted jack provides a safe method of changing buckeye couplings, which are very heavy!

We use a Scissor Lift Pallet Truck such as

Not too expensive and which we also use for changing dynamos and vac cylinders.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I shall have a dig around in the settings next week and see if I can make the comments facility more openly available.

Just wondered if anyone knows the identity of the B1 locomotive that had been set aside for the M&GN Society in the early sixties in the hope that it could be saved? I believe funds were not available so it was sadly scrapped.

Just a note of encouragement: Your reports are very interesting and detailed - if only more railways would provide such a blog. The addition of 'monkey' to the reports is a nice bit of humour!

Thanks for that, we like to add a bit of sillyness, it reflects the atmosphere of the workshop!

Had a great time at the gala yesterday, and finally got to see an Ivatt 4MT up close. Actually think they are quite handsome machines, even if it looks as if the running plates were stuck on as an afterthought

W46139 looks stunning. Noting comment that little is known of its history whilst at the EARM, IIRC, there was only one suburban T there in the '70's plus two BT's. Think the T belonged to RVP and was at least partially restored as it was one of the two main coaches used on the passenger trains during the mid '70's, (the other was a BT (E43167 or 69..??)), until replaced by Mk1 corridor stock. Congratulations to all involved with this project.
    Kind regards

Another really good read. You seem to be making incredible progress on GER 853 and your Gold Standard refurb Mk1s must be the best in preservation. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to a visit to the NNR before too long

Thanks for those kind words. There is a really good volunteer team working on 853 who are using a lot of skills they honed on the M&GN Picnic Saloon restoration to make short work on 853.

A lot of the Mark 1's on the NNR have been in very intensive (by heritage standards) use for many years, so these "Gold" rebuilds are proving the only way to get coaches to a standard where we can send them out into service without having to deal with repairs on them every 5 minutes, which is the case with some of the NNR's rougher Mark 1's. I think as time goes on more railways will be taking their Mark 1's to that level as part of routine major overhauls.
