At least one other visitor is pencilled in but, until the bits of paper are signed, I'll keep quiet. (Even though it isn't exactly a well-kept secret!) Should be a good gala with some locos that have never before visited

Well, I suppose that makes sense, it doesn't have far to go being based on my local, the KWVR, and it is such a lovely little locomotive, always a hit as it's something a bit different

No point in keeping silent any more as its pretty well known that the third tank loco visitor will be Large Prairie 4144, courtesy of the Great Western Society. It will be interesting to see how this loco performs on NYMR services in comparison with 80072.
Should be an interesting spring gala this year.

Three nights booked in Goathland to co-incide with the second weekend, sounds a very interesting line up.

Quote from the link in the post above:

"The event will see a number of visiting steam locomotives on the iconic NYMR line, including 4144 ‘Large Prairie’ Tank, which was built a staggering 51 years ago in 1965, 80072 ‘Standard’ Tank, which was designed by Engineer R.A.Riddles, and 1054 ‘Coal Tank’, the last surviving member of its class. Home fleet locomotives making an appearance include 45428 ‘Eric Treacy’ and 76079."

    Agree it is staggering....

I'm not sure the marketing is correct for this event.

"During the event visitors can explore iconic railway stations including Pickering, Goathland, Levisham and Grosmont Station, "

In what way are they iconic? I don't think I've ever heard such overuse and misuse of this word until this year in the news reports about Scotsman's return.

" 4144 ‘Large Prairie’ Tank, which was built a staggering 51 years ago in 1965" ..really? After the Hunslet austerities in 1964? Interesting.

Still the visiting locos are a good varied choice and I look forward to the gala very much, getting the timetables early is a great help and what a lot to go at.

Goathland would probably be the closest the line has to 'iconic', but I agree the use of hyperbole is a bit cringeworthy.

If all you watch is tv I wouldn't doubt, though the other stations on individual merit to an enthusiast I would personally credit as superb in both atmospheric as well as period correct.
Can't please everyone, but footfall annually thankfully remains positive, which ought to indicate either Hogsmead is indeed iconic or maybe there is something a little more to the railway

I'd hope it was the latter, but still, it seems these days that if one says something enough times, everyone starts believing it. Whilst I agree they are well-restored and maintained with ambience, what is 'iconic' about Pickering and Levisham? Are they words on the street from Thurso to Penzance? No, I'm convinced that there's marketing, and there's marketing in this instance.

There are a host of horribly misused/cliched words - "stunning"and "awesome" spring readily to mind - so why pick on "iconic"?

I think Pickering, since the rebuilding of the train shed roof is pretty special. Last Thursday I finished work a little early and wandered down there to soak up the atmosphere. Flying Scotsman was stopped with it's chimney under the end girder and was filling the roof space with smoke.

There are not stations that can match that.

Because it is so overused at the moment. It was repeated ad nauseum in every interview on the Kings X to York trip, and it seems to have carried on being overused, the media need to use a thesaurus!

To prove the point have just seen a Yorkshire Life article on Scotsman's NYMR visit and they used the I word six times in a very short article.
On the plus side the publicity for the railway follows on with a colour photograph in todays Yorkshire Post of Scotsman at Darnholm curve..an iconic location!?!

Iconic is vastly overused today, I would suggest that in reality there are not much more than a handful of buildings in the country that deserve the iconic tag, those that are etched into the national consciousness such as Stonehenge, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, St Pauls, a few of the large cathedrals and minsters, old Wembley, Lords, some of the castles, maybe KX York & Paddington stations, the Post Office Tower, and really thats about it. Buildings that the majority of the populace can conjure up in their minds eye at the mention of them, Im an enthusist and hardly picture Levisham station. But we live in age where everything is iconic to the extent that the word has lost its meaning.

    Spleen vented.

Oh, and dont get me started on artisan/artisnal which it seems is now applied to every other food or beer menu item.

Rather than worrying about the vocabulary used by someone in the NYMR's marketing dept, one has to question the loco line up for the gala... The home fleet is currently standing at 2. The coal tank had to cancel it's Bluebell visit due to the continuing saga with the KWVR access routes and the standard tank was last seen on a badly damaged low loader on the M5... Hopefully all will be able go get there and access will be granted for the coal tank, and no damage announced for the standard
