Received e-ticket today. 46100, times as on RTT and UK Steam. Just hoping it manages to get out of Carlisle a bit sooner than last Saturday!!

I see that on leaving Carlisle, this meets the incoming Statesman, ex Newport, that has come round the coast. Lets hope we get away on time or two platforms will be occupied with charters....

That complicates things! I was thinking if the CCE was a bit late at Carlisle and had to use the old 1440 slot behind the 1433 service train that would not be too bad. But I can't see how they can have two out of platforms 1, 3 and 4 occupied by charters simultaneously. And they can't afford to have the Newport train hanging around forever outside the station.Everything has to go more or less right.

We shall just have to keep our fingers crossed that we don't get delayed at Carnforth like last week.

Makes you wonder doesn't it -- How did the railway manage in the past when Carlisle station served two more routes than it currently does and had to cope with loco changes, trains splitting / joining, stock being added or removed etc. Always amazed me that Citadel never had more than three through platforms.

I think that one reason is the railways were far more slick when they needed to be back in time. Nowadays it takes forever to complete the simplest movement. For example I have a log of the 1130 KGX -Scarborough when we were booked six minutes at Grantham. We were ready to go again after five minutes.....having changed locos.

I spent a memorable day at Carlisle in August 63 copping 72005/8/9 among many others. Your post caused me to look at my 1960 Bradshaw. Thirteen trains northbound weekday on the WCML of which three were in the middle of the night. My memory corresponded with that--- lengthy periods of nothing much happening, trying to see freights on the avoiding lines, punctuated by occasional bursts of activity. These days on average there's three an hour each way to handle on the main line. Saying that, it must have been really frenetic there on a summer Saturday back in the day with those Morecambe and Blackpool extras.

That's a good question! I certainly never saw her at Lancaster/Preston/Carlisle in the late 50's/early 60's when she was allocated to depots on the Midland main line.

The net says withdrawn from Kingmoor April '65.

On another historical theme, did 46100 and 46152 (?) exchange identities permanently in 1933 or did they switch back after the US trip?

46100 withdrawn 1962 from a midland line shed Nottingham I think. I was told it was very rough at the time ,axel boxes thumping.

She was in Butlins Skegness in 1965!
...and yes, the identities were never switched back, although at re-build not a lot of the original Scots were left, cabs and fittings being part of the survival.

Thanks Silver Fox and Peckett. Apols for misinformation. So the question of when she was transferred from the Western Section to the Midland remains.

Per RTT ECS was 59L into Euston. Hope that it's not going to be one of those days that started badly then fell away. Just left only 39L - things are on the up!

The transfer took place in 1959 when 46100 was located to Nottingham and its first regular duty was the St Pancras - Nottingham leg of the "Waverley"; I still recall the disbelief of local enthusiasts at Corby when it made its first appearance as it passed the grammar school that we had just started. The transfer followed the arrivals of the first batch of Class 40 in service from May 1959 which would indicate the transfer taking place around October / November 1959 as this included locomotives being reallocated to Nottingham (46100 / 112), Kentish Town (46103 / 118 / 123 / 154) and Millhouses (46147 / 60 / 62) IIRC when both Patriots and Royal Sots were displaced.

Left Crewe 25 down. A coach had to be shunted from the middle of the train before leaving Southall fault with brakes I believe, so it's standing room only.

Good idea to test the coaching stock a day before you have to use it, methinks! But there again, perhaps that's what actually happens and it was a last minute problem.

It looks as though the train didn't pick up at Preston so that might have been a shock for those waiting there. That said if the train is one coach light then they might have needed the space.
