If you must know, yes, my contact says it's still in the NR planning system, but I don't know why I bother.

In case of difficulty they could always have renumbered it.;)

I'm not surprised they're having trouble pathing it. The Statesman Rail from Ely goes northbound up the coast arriving Carlisle platform 3 1352 no path southbound over Shap yet, presumably 1450 or 1550. The Bridlington departs Carlisle platform 3 at 1410 southbound round the coast having arrived just after 12. It's going to be musical trains at Carlisle.

A nice long steam day :) but timings that screw up any hope of getting to and from Crewe if you don't live within about a 50 mile radius of Crewe. Still you get what you get I suppose. It's a good chunk of Scot mileage.

Like myself, 140 miles away and no chance of getting back by train. 7hrs and 10 mins Crewe to Carlisle? Must be a preservation record.

You should try Victoria to Exeter on a bad day. It has been known to take six and a half hours. Even Tornado only just beat five and half hours from Waterloo last weekend. It's called 'steam on the national network'. Live with it or live without it. (Sorry I'm in reflective mood today!)

Afternoon all, just working out loading and going from the coach I'm in (J) I'm up to 11. I'd think that's probably about the right sort of loading - edit it might help if I read the ticket fully...

Looking at past Cumbrian Mountain Expresses that went from Crewe to Carlisle via the S&C, the times are 6am off Crewe, 1pm into Carlisle = 7 hours, so nothing new.

Sounds like it should be passing Galatea somewhere near Whitehaven/Workington around 3pm.

But isn't that the same as early starts from London or say Bristol that people in the North would face ?

We live in mid Wales and it is still doable leaving the car at Craven Arms, with trains leaving up to beyond 11pm to allow for delays. It is steam hauled throughout, includes Cumbrian Coast and has the advertised locomotive - all things the doom mongerers were saying may not happen! So well done Rtc, wcrc and network rail for pulling this out the bag - dare say some will still moan! Now really looking forward to this, my first big steam tour since the fabulous Scottish Lowlander (not much to live up to!).

A totally reasonable comment. Clearly this is a trip that starts in the north west and is designed for those in the north west. By the way, it was an excellent trip as originally conceived so I have no argument about that at all.

The original outline timings - 0900 from Crewe, returning at 1930 (still shown on the web site, but don't get me started on that) - gave good margins at either end for a day trip from London so it was potentially the best of both worlds for everyone. That is not now possible but if you are the tour operator and you can fill the train, I guess that it doesn't matter who is on it and I realise that.

So no complaints, just sadness that you can plan absolutely nothing much nowadays until a few days before. So much for domestic harmony. :(

Yes, you're quite correct, Shrewsbury is the limit by looks of it. Living where we do it always involves a bit of travel, haven't seen many pick ups from Newtown or Llandrindod recently!

Looking at the timings for Saturday, it seems that NR is in no hurry for the charter to get off the M northbound. We are booked 45 minutes to Wigan for the 36 miles. And then we are given 29 minutes for the 15 miles onward to Preston. Even slower on the return from Preston to Wigan and about the same back to Crewe. Oh, and Carlisle to Carnforth in 102 minutes including a 20 minute refreshment break at Plumpton.

Someone back up thread suggested that the day was a bit of a marathon. That's part of the reason but I guess you you take what you are given nowadays. A possibly great day nonetheless.
