Nah - it's you ! just looked at the tiff at 100% and it looks like reflections on new paint -- see, no West Coast branding and a proper size coach number ! 35517.

Ray says the trouble is the radius rod broke which is part of the valve gear.

Quoted from the horses mouth !

    Ian Riley

Unfortunately 44871 has a broken Radius Rod and thanks to our industry partners at L.S.L. is now at their Crewe HQ.

We have replacement components on their way to site together with specialist equipment and staff.

We hope 44871's delayed attendance on this Railtour is not too prolonged and can only apologise for any inconvenience or disappointment caused.

Thanks maureen for letting us all know.

I wonder if 45212 will become a donor engine and gift its own just for a few days to at least keep the show on the road for the latter part of the tour??

Having said that, there's worser places to fail than Crewe to fix a loco...all fingers crossed that they get it sorted....

Good news for all concerned (apart from the bent rod).

What am I even reading here! The lads at Rileys have pulled out all the stops to get that loco ready for the start of the tour and for it to fail is gutting for them yet all you can do is complain and make stupid comments like 'it's a joke'. Do you think they went and snapped the radius rod for the fun of it?

I think the rods for the post war 5s are a slightly different design so 45212 would not have been any good.

It's not a joke, it's bad luck, s**t happens, if it gets you that stressed I'd take up stamp collecting.
It says a lot about the the highly developed preservation movement that a replacement part is already winging its way to Crewe and the loco will no doubt take up its duties in Scotland as scheduled.

Looking at the above photo, and https://flic.kr/p/GAujYg it looks like it was the fireman's side rod that has failed.

  18. I would like to apologise to all on here for my earlier comments. Of course its unforseen and failures can and do happen as I am more than well aware. I have invested a lot of time and effort in getting to Cornwall for the first 2 days and onto Llanvihengel for day three and said some things that maybe I shouldnt have. I know others have invested just as much and I also feel for those travelling. I hope Ian managed to pull off his repairs and that we still see the Black 5 out on day 3. I'm big enough to apologise when I am wrong. I hope you will accept it in the same vein.

It was - didn't look at a second shot earlier but it shows the fault more clearly.

One of those "could be worse" evenings. Valve gear easier to work on than (say) an axle bearing, outside motion on a black five easier to work on than (say) inside gear on a Hall or a Bulleid pacific; more chance of finding a spare for a Black 5 than (say) a Princess or an A3; failed not far from Crewe. The prospects for Saturday onwards (and maybe Wed or Thu?) are looking rather brighter than they were a few hours ago.
