if it counts I think the ELR ran a special for Bayern Munich fans a few years back when they played a match against Manchester City but didn't take them to the match itself.

That reply took you 3 minutes, what took you so long....:).

Despite all the bickering etc, when you want an answer NP can provide it, and quickly.
    So what was the result?

FC United of Manchester played at Ramsbottom in 2015 (Northern Premier League). ELR provided a steam hauled 8 car special from Heywood to Ramsbottom.

Most probably yes, but it could goto Horsham too.

Though the rare steam mileage is West Croydon to Sutton... So far I can only find it twice in preservation, both times in 2007. (Steam goes east bound from Horsham thru Cheam, Sutton then turns left onto Carshalton /Mitcham line a couple of times a year, just a shame it doesn't go westbound.. That climb is very severe upto Sutton from Hackbridge).

It's a 4-5 mile long climb all the way from West Croydon and Waddon, then pretty much straight and continuing climb thru Wallington to Carshalton Beeches with curves continuing the climb to Sutton..somewhere around Wallington is probably where I'll go, will have to see what some vantage spots look like but I remember a three arched bridge just east of the station which that I once thought may be a good spot to see something pass under.

There is a branch from Sutton to Epsom Downs, I have been unable to find any steam on this line in preservation.

Another good spot is the climb to Selhurst itself, I bet the departure will be a good one, but that's hardly rare steam territory, the rest of the route towards Southampton is well trodden by steam.

Lets hope they are not paying to see them relegated! Back in the day we used to spend a large sum of money to travel away on intercity.

The risk of being checked before the junction and being unable to re-start is too great to allow steam that way, I suspect. Even more fun would be Wimbledon to Sutton - 1 in 44 up to Sutton!

What about changing 2 for a 6 and putting Croydon plates on!

You have to think what it was like when the commuter services around this area were operated by Terriers !

Not on the Sutton - Wimbledon line - it was only built in the 1930s specifcally for electric traction and nick-named the 'wall of death line' owing to its frequent curves and gradients.

Agreed the line was only built to put off the building of the Northern line to Sutton (something much needed).

There is a shaft a St Helier which is supposed to be an entrance tunnel for a proposed station at St Helier hospital I understand. Certainly is still there today, but can't find anything online about it.

Keep your eyes on this page of the Icons of Steam Website as they are going to publish the Route details and timings nearer the time: http://www.iconsofsteam.com/football/

Note also that the trip is being crewed by DB Cargo.

The graphic on that Icons of steam page sure looks like Epsom/Leatherhead/Guildford/Havant to me.

If anyone is considering Carshalton, Sutton or Wallington, next to Carshalton beeches is a locally renown Stennings family bakery, 100 years of tradition, good breakfast and a must on a Saturday morning...

No connection to me, but reccomended if you've been walking up / down some of the local hills to watch this.

(Recently Nick Clegg took sanctuary there when he was mobbed at St Helier hospital during the election), his impromptu press statement outside their doors was pretty much what sealed him keeping the seat here..as everyone recognised the bakery on TV !, he lost every other seat in the neighbourhood !

Both CB station and the Bakery has a local history section with pictures, maps etc.

LOL, that graphic look like one of the very early tom tom implementations, where its only contribution to giving directions was "Make a U-Turn"

Anyone taking bets on that graphic describing a route to the Docks? Nearer to the ground and deals very well with crowd movement to the ground.

Private Eye once took the water out of the Sun's library photographs by running a story of a man falling off a roof illustrated by a photo captioned: "A similar shed in the south of England".:)
