Unfortunately its not branchline running thats the problem. The last stretch from worgret Junction to Wareham is over the 80mph, electrified, busy main line and so the stock has to be to mainline standards type approved and available. Capacity, fit and familiarity with current SR operations are also considerations. Lots of alternatives have been considered at length before coming to the conclusion that a delay to allow the completion of the work on the DMU was the best option for the railway. After 35 years of waiting and working another few months wont hurt anyone.

Can someone kindly tell me which loco is in service this week.
A visit to the railway is long overdue. Many thanks. <BJ>

Has SR considered asking if 41313 could visit Swanage for a weekend, whilst on its way back to the IOW? Preferably in conjunction with 41312, which is newly overhauled. Correct for the branch and consecutively numbered. Neat.

80104 is in traffic this week, barring the usual caveats.

Alas that would seem unlikely to be granted - reading the Autumn Island Rail News a request from the S&D Trust has already been turned down, as it would dilute the impact of it's return on the Island and 'open the floodgates' for requests from other lines.

31806 and 30053 are in traffic this weekend, with one of them (I believe the plan being 31806) continuing from Tuesday.

    Spotted at Norden.

It would seem Swanage Railway are converting some of their 08s to Steam power (or is that to provide steam heating in the winter)

I led to believe that is the tender intended for use behind 34072 when her overhaul is completed. Could be wrong though...

No. They're just trying to hide their diesel-hauled services. The shunter looks like a Bulleid anyway. Their only problem is adding a suitable wheelslip device to the shunter, as it is normally very sure-footed.

You're quite right Adrian, it is the tender that will be used behind '257 Squadron' when it is completed. We used it while taking 'Eddystone' up to Norden for onward road transport to Herston Works a couple of weeks ago (I think; each week merges into the next!) as 28's own tender has already been in Herston Works for a while now.

First movement this year over the mainline connection today; a SWT 158 on a stakeholders/route training trip (and a trip to the fish and chip shop on Swanage seafront!).

With the Diesel Gala on this weekend, I have a couple of questions I need to ask please.

Firstly, what have previous Swanage Railway Diesel Gala's been like in terms of enthusiasts behaviour? Having not been to a Diesel Gala at the Swanage Railway before, I would like to get an idea of what to expect. While most diesel enthusiasts do behave well, there are a few who like to cause trouble (ie getting drunk, bellowing, hitler gestures out of the windows etc). I would like to get to see, photo and travel behind D832 again before it goes back up north, but, if there are likely to be trouble makers, I might be better off staying away.

Secondly, what coaches (as in how many seats of how many coaches) are likely to be used please? I like to photograph coaches as well as locomotives, and if most or all of the coaching stock is going to be out in use, I might be able to get the coaches "missing" from my photos.

Isn't this standard behaviour at a diesel gala.
