    The lock stock & barrel move of Steamport from Southport to become Ribble Steam Railway at Preston was infinitely the best thing that has happened to the society in the past decades. Have a look at the facilities we now have, & try to compare with where we could have been had we not deliberately looked for alternative sites on which to base our future?

    Does this one count? It was never a preserved railway as such as the scheme was killed off by the local nimbys. Longmoor would have been a good base with fully equiped workshop and a lot of undercover accommodation

    Quite right. :) How much stock was saved from Longmoor out of interest? I know there was lots of interesting stuff there.

    Some of the coaches, including the LNWR 6 wheeler, went to the KESR. 600 went to the SVR, 196 ended up in Belgium via various UK sites. The Sentinel 0-8-0 went to the Avon Valley.

    Blackmoor Vale for one; when the Longmoor scheme closed, she moved to the Bluebell. Bulleid CK 5768 took the same route.

    And not forgetting 35028, 75029 and 92203 and the little industrial Lord Fisher. There were also two stuffed and mounted locos, not sure what happened to them.

    They were 'Gazelle' and 'Woolmer'; both were on the lawn outside the officers mess at Longmoor. Gazelle is at the Colonel Stephens museum, 'Woolmer' went to the Army Transport Museum at Beverley and is now in the Milestones Living History Museum, Hampshire.

    41298 arrived from Nine Elms, along with 34023 and 35028, in August 67. It seemed according to photos, to spend Sunday July 9, sitting around in the yard not doing much. When the fire was dropped that evening, it wouldn't steam again until 2015, 48 years later. Perhaps a record for a straight from BR to preservation loco?

    I thought that 41298 travelled separately, hauled by a BRCW Type3?

    Plenty in the NRM went there straight from BR, and haven't yet steamed.

    Arguably the Rocket went from service to preservation and I don't fancy it's chances of steaming again !

    101_0998.jpg This is "Gazelle" (ex Longmoor static display, see above) in April 2012 on a low loader having been taken out of the Col Stephens Railway Museum at Tenterden for transport to a temporary exhibition at York. It had just been repainted from Army blue into the later Shropshire & Montgomeryshire green.

    Was just looking through this thread, the first time I've been on the forum in a few years, and noticed mentions of the Vale of Neath Railway. This is the first I've heard of this - where were they based? I can't find anything outside this forum

    As an addition to the thread, I believe there was at least 1 preservation attempt local to me in the Rhondda Valleys - I seem to remember hearing about an attempt to preserve the line to Maerdy when trains stopped running to Mardy Colliery in 1986, although it fell away because the trackbed was destined to be used for a new road (which didn't open for another 20 years). I also vaguely remember something about an attempt to set up a railway in Blaencwm. Was one of these the Heron Line? I've seen that name mentioned. Nowadays all the attention there is set on reopening the Rhondda Tunnel for cyclists
