To be honest, that improves the gala for me. I just want to see and ride behind the home fleet. A member of the P Class would be great to see on the island sometime though!

    From the IWSR website:

'The Isle of Wight Steam Railway regrets to announce that due to an unforeseen technical issue the appearance of GWR Prairie tank engine 5521 at our May Spring Gala has been cancelled. The difficulty is outside the control of both the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and the locomotive owner. Fortunately, it is anticipated that all other advertised locomotives including Ivatt 2MT class locomotive 41298 will ensure an enjoyable and successful Gala '.

Is it out of gauge for the IoW ferry? It is a GWR locomotive after all.

L150 is currently the only operational steam loco at the Avon Valley, and with 15 out of action for the near future, I suspect it's more a case of that she can't be spared and no cover has been found for the weekend.

Ivatt 41298 will be formally returned to service at 1145 on Saturday 28th. Footplate rides in aid of the appeal to restore sister locomotive 41313 to steam are available all weekend. See details below:

NEWS OF THE GALA - a chance to be on the footplate for 41298’s official return to service!

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway is offering footplate rides for a full round trip on the Railway on all three days of our Gala Weekend on 28th, 29th and 30th May, which sees the formal return to service of Ivatt 41298. The footplate ride on 41298’s first official train, which will be at 12noon on Saturday 28th will be auctioned to the highest bidder at 1145. For the rest of the weekend, they will cost £80 for No 24 Calbourne and No 11 Newport and £120 for 41298.

All proceeds will go to the Appeal for 41298’s sister locomotive, currently under restoration at the East Somerset Railway. For further information on Footplate Experiences including details of Terms and Conditions see http://www.iwsteamrailway.co.uk/footplate-experiences.aspx Please contact Liz Tagart at LizT@iwsteamrailway.co.uk to book.

I think lack of air brakes would rule out that plan, at least for working passenger trains unassisted.

Isn't that the prairie with air brakes though for the steam on the met running?

Yes - but the question I was responding to was about seeing a P class on the Island, none of which has air brakes!

W8 went out on a test run this morning so a very good chance that it will be added to the line up for the Gala

W8 would be a very welcome bonus! This event is already a must for me. There's something very special about this line and your special events always deliver.

'Team Terrier' have really pulled out the stops to get W8 back in traffic for the gala. Last Sunday they were swarming all over her to get the final reassembly jobs done, a steam test and loaded test trial took place on Tuesday. For a picture of W8 at Smallbrook have a look at our Facebook page.

The good news is that the loco line up for the weekend will be Terriers 8 & 11, W24 'Calbourne' and Ivatt 41298. It's sure to be a great weekend, lots to see and do; the Gala page on the IWSR website now includes the final version of the WTT.

I understand that there are still footplate experience places available, the railway is offering footplate rides for a full round trip on all three days of the Gala Weekend. The footplate ride on 41298’s first official train, which will be at 12noon on Saturday 28th, will be auctioned to the highest bidder at 1145. For the rest of the weekend, they will cost £80 for No 24 'Calbourne' and No 11 'Newport' and £120 for 41298.

For further information on Footplate Experiences including details of Terms and Conditions see http://www.iwsteamrailway.co.uk/footplate-experiences.aspx Please contact Liz Tagart at LizT@iwsteamrailway.co.uk and book your place.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the Island this weekend!

I see the "final" version of the WTT is dated 1st May, before W8 was known to be available. It only has 3 locomotive duties on it.

I've just checked the published WTT and it does have 4 duties shown, the duty now taken by W8 would have been Class 03 D2059 - which I am sure some people would have enjoyed, we often have visitors keen to see the 03 and 05.

I've just got back from doing a pre-gala shunt, all four locos have now been lit up ready for tomorrow. The Real Ale bar is also now good to go, 8 ales available, 7 from the Island's breweries. So it's all looking good for a great weekend, I'm sure that all of our visitors will enjoy it!

Read that diagrams will be able to purchase on the day, so the roster won't be announced in advance? Not too fussed, will be heading over for a jolly on Sunday to ride!

The IWSR gala is underway now, if you can't get to the Island in person you can catch some of the action on our Havenstreet webcam.
