Reading in various places over the years it seems at least to me that leaking tubes is becoming ever more common at least in the UK. Which brings me to ask a couple of questions, are the tubes steel, copper or brass? What Water treatment regime is being used? how are the tubes fitted into the firebox tubeplate? and is there any ferrules in the tubes and what are they made out of?

More good news is that S160 6046 should arrive today, so things are looking up for steam availability.

I can't remember when I last saw a boiler with brass or copper tubes, other than ones that haven't been used for the last 30-40 years. Most tubes are beaded over in the firebox, these days. Ferruling them seems to be a practice that is now frowned upon, for loco boiler small tubes, at least. Some superheater flues are still ferruled but I think thart the majority are screwed expanded and beaded

Ok I'm weird, although I dare say elements of this trickle through the tourist market. I enjoy North Yorks Moors not just for steam, but it is superb walking country and going back a couple of years there was the regular SSE as a bonus. Once upon a time there was the superb Moorsbus network, that got you places for walking not normally served by public transport - or even to interesting pubs for lunch/beer. Moorsbus of course suffered funding cuts and only a fragment survives.

So back a few years I headed north not just for NYMR and if it was a box day or locos not that exciting, no matter, I would hop on Moorsbus. Or if an intetersing loco on SSE, head to York.

Today - no Moorsbus, no regular SSE and an erratic NYMR for steam. To say I don't go is untrue, but I evaluate options and the result is North Yorks is no longer getting my tourist spend on a regular basis. Yes, I will dip in for S160/B1 soon but it will be infrequent compared to a few years back.

Down under, I know of at least 3 Locomotives (There is likely many more) in service that have Copper Tubes which are expanded, beaded & Ferruled, one of which had some leakage following some tube replacement (Also Copper) which has now been rectified. I am curious about Flues being screwed into the tubeplate, this is a practice I have never heard of before on anything over here, what is the reasoning behind it?

I was on the railway yesterday and originally 76079 was meant to be running, but it had failed by the time I got to Grosmont. Does anyone know what happened?

Don't know, but I assume it was on a Whitby duty so failing its FTR sounds likely, which could be fairly minor.

If we cover every poorly loco on NYMR here, then this could be quite a big thread! Not that understanding why so many locos fail is not of interest. I suspect the seemingly poor reliability is part explained by needing locos passed for NR and then ensuring they pass the FTR.

It was back in traffic today, along with 45428, 63395 and 6046.

Yes :) Had a good couple of days at the railway; got behind 3 of 4 yesterday (the Black 5 missed out). Also thanks to the guard on the 15.40 ex-Grosmont yesterday and the shopkeeper at Goathland for some smart chasing round when we discovered we had left our son's bag on a luggage rack on the 14.30 ex-Grosmont; a bit of behind the scenes organisation and it was returned to us at Levisham, the bag having done a higher mileage than us!

I know it is not the C&W thread, but have to say I am impressed with the comfort in the Gresley brake 3rd.

Glad you had a good trip.

That coach only returned from the NRM last week.

Nothing to do with NR required equipment. A minor problem but not one that can be dealt with when full of water.

How does 6046 compare with your Wainright favourites, then?

Well, the visibility in both directions is better from one of Wainwright's, and cab access a bit easier, but I don't suppose one will be taking six out of Grosmont any time soon!

Got to agree that cab access is not one of its strong points.
