A 6 Minute late departure due to watering continuing after the signals had been given meant that 1M34 Southampton to Manchester was directly behind with RTT showing 1M34 delayed by 6 minutes into Leamington where it over took the special. Maybe if the timetable had put 1M34 ahead of 1Z45 from Banbury the pushing wouldn't have been necessary.

Not an ideal pathing as you say and who can blame WCRC if they are careful over keeping to time. But there is a sad inevitability in all of this and I know that it's an old record but it does wrankle. Galatea plus 11 was exactly the right combination for decent running and, in the context of a busy railway, reasonable acceleration away from stops. The moment that you add an extra 120 ton lump on the back this all changes. And as far as WCRC operations is concerned, because they don't have availability across the country, if they need a diesel for whatever reason, (operational, heating, vacuum brake issues etc) then it will go with the train. This is becoming the steam charter of 2016, unless it is a DBC charter when there are other options.

More to the point, this seems to be becoming the norm for Steam Dreams. That's sad.

Is it ?, I'd call that more on the heavy side for a class 6, a coach or two less allowing a bit more in reserve, 46100 as a class 7 is limited by LSL to load 11 and VT don;t load to the limit on anything but the most severe grades like the South Devon Banks, while there's no doubt a Jubilee can handle 11, it's not going to be as brisk as a Scot or Duchess.

Agree with that but don't forget that the Steam Dreams set is typically 11, I believe, plus support so, unless it was a problem over low bookings they have kept the load sensible. Also, the trip was originally meant to be some iconic Class 7 loco from London.

Yes, I clocked that on RTT and knew there would be some pushing on the rise away from Banbury, but wasn't expecting the amount of thrash which was given. Regardless of the assistance, that was the best I've heard Galatea in a long time, full credit to the driver for putting on a show, especially after Codsall.

Despite the heavy shove in the second scene, this turned out to be a good day out, with Galatea sounding superb ! Enjoy :)

I wouldn't bet on it. From what I have seen on v ids and read, there has been a lot of pushing today which as ever, is very sad and so if 1Z45 preceded or followed 1M34 I suspect it would not have made any difference. How I wish WCR could adopt the DBC methods and ask for a shove only when it is scheduled, or when in exceptional circumstances, the DB inspector asks for it.

How do you know if that was not the case? Were you party to any radio communications between footplate and cab?

Whilst I wouldn't dream of posting a link, I see what looks like the Holyhead to Paddington times for Wednesday are now in the usual place.

Presumably I could post a link to the first half to Crewe, if that were possible. :)

I know this will have been said somewhere, but what are the passengers doing on the 2 days between the steam trips?

From the SD website : -

On days 2 & 3, you can either opt to make your own arrangements or join us for one of our optional excursions which, over the next two days, are likely to include a boat trip to Puffin Island and Beaumaris, Bodnant Gardens and Conway Town, Portmeirion village and Caernarfon, or Plas Newydd and Penryhn Castle.

Available in the usual place, though unmentionable for this engine. I'd keep some time free about a quarter past nine.

Yes everyone's favourite Essex girl and 46115.
Crossing the Mersey at Walton Old Junction about midday, here's where I spent many happy hours in the latter days of steam.

So for the fourth consecutive time a train on the North Wales coast will be hauled by a Scot.

A few statistics ,class 6 load limits. 1950s .Euston to Carnforth 495 tons full load ,430 limited load ,special limit 390 ,xl limit 350. . St Pancras to Leicester /Nottingham full 440,limited 390 ,xl 300 tons. They applied to how fast the train schedule was ,driver could ask for a pilot engine if over . A freight train would be considerable more ,depending on the type of train.

Yes but that was then. I think the ORR has laid down load limits that sit beneath custom and practice 60 years ago. This seems to imply that we are now working with: Class 5 - 10, Class 6/7 - 11, Class 8 - 12/13 but specific routes may have lower limits.
