A few weeks ago I had an advert through the post for the Peaks and Fells Explorer, running on 14th June from Hereford to Rugeley stations and with steam around the Cumbrian Coast. As it is reasonably cheap I am tempted to book, but it hasn't turned up on UK Steam. Anyone know if it's a runner?

You could always ask the operators rather than on here. I suspect they will have a better idea.

David - you are so reliable I would generally believe you over the websites of any of the tour companies!

Scots Guardsman is pencilled in for this one, with the LE movement over Shap surprisingly much earlier that the tour itself, leaving Carnforth around 7.20, then hanging around at Upperby for 5 hours. Both diesels heading direct back to Carnforth. So once again confounding the WCR critics with a pure steam run.

Point taken Ralph and thank you for posting this info, however you say "once again confounding the WCR critics".Lets remember that pure steam runs with WCR south of the Thames are now rarer than hen's teeth,I really can't remember the last one,and in the rest of the country they are very.very unusual. Only DBC now seem to be able to deliver a normally diesel free experience.

Don't WCRC have some vac fitted locomotives at York in association with the Scarborough trains so there is rescue capability there to a degree, as been suggested on numerous occasions DBC have rescue loco's in many locations and are all air fitted, WCRC don't and have the added complication of vacuum fitting?

Update on this, Scot is not available so steam will be Galatea from Sellafield only as she is out of gauge further north.

No, they don't - only on the day. The diesels that bring the train over from Carnforth are the back-up in case of problems with the steam loco.

Whatever is pulling it back from Sellafield to Carnforth just passed bottom of the garden light engine, didn't see who it is (and have no reason to doubt the suggestion its 45699) but can confirm the safety valve lifted as she passed so definitely wasn't a diesel!

I thought 45699 was cleared to work between Carlisle and Sellafield now, after a NR mix up? She worked this same route only a few weeks ago on the GB9, so what's changed that means she can't be used now?

EDIT: Just remembered this trip goes south, not north... :Updated:

Galatea rattled through Cark around 3 early, sounding good an not hanging about. No diesel in sight (apart from the one that passed light 5 mins earlier, train looked to be a fairly short set?

Edit - looking at the schedule on line its a bloody long day out 0500ish start from Hereford and back after midnight for c. 2hrs steam haulage?

7 + POB, the same as the Scarborough Spa set by the looks of it.

Is that what it was, I didn't count as I had a 3 year old to field - who is disgusted by WCRC's drivers reluctance to use the whistle.

Steam would have been longer if NR had not banned one jubilee north of Sellafield and not another? Anyway Gordon gave his best ably backed by Steve Chipperfield on shovel and Mick Rawlings keeping a watching brief as TI, and we had a very spirited run back to Carnforth in glorious sunshine.

Oh she was fairly rattling along through Cark, don't know the gradients but looked like they had the sanders on?

How long are you on board for, I hope not Hereford-Hereford!
