I don't think Bob Meanley's post was OTT,it usefully sets out exactly what the issues are and what VT have to do, although I believe all the points he raised have also been addressed on this forum by Ben of VT in the recent past. Where it gets confusing is his last paragraph where he appears to be saying there would be no problem with heads out of windows on the WSR,due to the 25mph speed limit and the good care the WSR take over control of trees.

 

How can a person or a group of people standing in a vestibule be seen as dangerous? Surely FGW would have been banned many times for some of the crowding that takes place on peak time trains out of Paddington?!

I understand the ORR and subsequently WCR have instructed Vintage trains to stick to the rules but surely a bit of common sense wouldn't go amiss? The idea of being sat, stuck in a seat on a Mk2 carriage all day does not appeal to me one bit.

I hqve been asking behind the scenes for some clarification on this.

The situation as I understand it is that when the WSR accept somebody elses train they have to be satisfied that they have a proper safety case.

What it means is that although the train is on WSR metals, it is running under VT(WC?) safety case not theirs = hence the issues over the EX6 WSRA Trustees working on the QB after one had his WSR Card withdrawn

So the train is running under VT's rules not the WSR's

 

I may as well bang my head on a brick wall.....I do sometimes wonder why we give our free time so people can moan. Exceptionally hard work goes on behind the scenes to enable people to have an enjoyable day out.
The fact is, that to run such charters in 2016 on a modern railway, certain rules and regulations must be adhered too.
Bob has quite clearly stated the reasons why things are the way they are, surely from leading figure head in the fraternity that should be a good enough explanation.

 

Indeed. Also, don't assume that posts on discussion sites like this one are representative of what your potential customers believe. It's not a fair and representative sample. Rather, it's the views of the few who feel strongly enough about a subject to go to the trouble of posting (some may say, those who have an axe to grind). Likewise, don't let the apparent hostility of a few stop you from using this as a channel for communicating with the rest of us if/when you have something to useful or just interesting to pass on.

 

Can I say that we who volunteer on the WSR (I was on duty as signalman at Blue Anchor) really enjoy having the charters that visit us during the year and are immensely GRATEFUL to the folk who wade through the morass of modern regulations and structures to make that possible, and those who support the charters by paying to ride on them.

Nicely put. I travel frequently on HST services out of Paddington and not only is standing in a vestuble allowed, so is hanging out of the window which I do if it is particularly claustrophic at busy times. I have never been asked to move or to get my head in. And this is at 125mph.

 

Here here. As an ex person who pulled signals on the WR in the 60's, I was a signalman and signalman will always be the correct reference. I do however appreciate that a younger generation working the power boxes up here in and around London now use "signallers" but I have never heard "signal person".

 

I used to work in an office shared with Social Services.

When the sandwich man came I used to send an 'all users' e-mail stating that 'The Sandwich Person (of Gender)' has arrived

Funnily enough it was the Social Workers who laughed most
