You could go out just to savour the sounds and smells but close your eyes and imagine the livery that suits you.

Forget the pictures. Enjoy the sight of a steam engine hard at work without having to look at it through a piece of glass. <BJ>

A long day out for sounds and smells. Just to put the record straight I've got nothing against WCRC or their locos, quite the opposite they have done more than any to keep steam on the mainline, I didn't go and see Royal Scot when it was in red for the same reason. Perhaps it's because I'm a railway modeller as well. We are a very fussy lot.

I've got some sympathy for you as I wouldn't waste the effort going to see a loco with a fictitious identity. However, as for Galatea, you could always go for black & white. I saw a B&W shot of 48624 on here when it was painted maroon and it looked pretty good.

Also, if it's 45699 on next Saturday's "End of Southern Steam", I'd certainly give it some consideration. Just wish RTC would update the website. I'd be quite tempted to travel on this one if I could ensure it was steam both ways including a banker out of Weymouth, but the website is still pointing to 34067 and 35018, which seems pretty unlikely, to put it mildly.

Still, getting back on subject, regardless of the colour of the loco up front, It's good that passengers will be enjoying an unassisted run through some very attractive scenery today. I hope the showers hold off. Worcester is an interesting destination. Went there a couple of years ago on RTC's Welsh Borderer and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Looking good at Appleford Level Crossing this morning. It sounded good as well! The livery may well be wrong but I reckon it makes a pretty picture!! galatea_02_sm.jpg

Fingers crossed the Weymouth trip on the 9th has a similar loading. All of the really great Weymouth trips in recent years have had similar loads even with 35028 in charge.

'Galatea' seen at MKC on the LE move 2 days ago, then departing Oxford on the actual tour, what a great sound she produced! Some spotters reckon she'll work the Weymouth trip next week

On the subject of Jubilee liveries . . . I was fortunate to see a number of Jubilees working during the final BR days when I was very young, 1961-64. I still have a list of the locos I saw. I remember them as green - very dirty green! - locos, but I was very young and cannot be sure. Is it possible that any of those that I saw were red during this period?

Two views from Radley Station (one from the old Abingdon Bay platform), Passing the watering stop at Oxford up and down, A view of Oxford up and down from the footbridge, the water bowser from the road, and finally passing through Oxford Pl 3 and smartly through Oxford North Junction.

No they would have been lined green with the possibility towards the end of that period green without the lining, no jubilee ever appeared in red with BR insignia

Well I think you are all being very sniffy. It makes a fabulous noise, worked unassisted, looks very smart indeed, and as the appearance of a steam loco on a modern main line is a complete anachronism who gives a monkeys if the livery is not period perfect. So there. :p

It's not just period imperfect its totally spurious but never mind, to Kylchap, who enquired about 60s livery, most of them ended up looking like this

Never seen 45699 before. I think it looks and sounds magnificent. I'm grateful someone has put the money up to restore this loco and for that they have more than paid for the right to paint it any colour they like. Here it is leaving Worcester earlier
