If anything less isn't suitable for wheelchair users, it isn't 'massively overbuilt', it's 'fit for purpose'. If wheelchair users can't use a bridge, it's 'unfit'.

    Well done Swanage!
    More please!

Is the wrecked coach at Norden for the chop?

Its a Maunsell Push/Pull Driving coach. Its number escapes me. Its there for dismantling and recovery of any parts and materials that could be off future use in the restoration of other Maunsell coaches.. The underframes await a decision. Its been in a very poor state for a long time but we are only just getting around to dismantling. Shame really but this one is way past restoration and has been for many years.

It is. As can be seen from the photos, the body has lost all structural integrity, and dismantling really is unfortunately the only option. Moving it over pointwork in particular to get it there was interesting, to say the least!

Help to refresh the memory. Was this cosmetically restored and run behind the M7 for a few charters many moons ago?

No. This was one that arrived from the Mid Hants c15 years ago; the one that was cosmetically restored, 6699, is currently in store.

I seem to recall that there's a Maunsell on the SR with its entire side falling off and only held on with ratchet straps - is that another one, and is it too for the chop?

There was one that was like that a few years ago that the body was dismantled on previously (BTK No.2768); this is now in store (and colloquially referred to as the MFI flat pack). This one is the one that more recently has had the side collapsing, so it would depend on when you last visited as to which one of these two vehicles it was you saw.

The inconsistent gaps between those numbers on the wagon still annoy me...!

I suspect worse was seen in pre-preservation days. I have a photo of a couple of otherwise identical private-owner tar wagons. One is labelled "South - East Tar Distillers LTD"; the other the same but ends "LD" - presumably the sign writer misjudged the spacing on the second wagon and ran out of room!
