The loco is due to transfer to St. Philips Marsh, Bristol later today. The Lathe building at the depot houses a Hegenscheidt wheel lathe.
According to recent reports regarding the loco it could prove very useful. <BJ>

Absolutely very useful. As for the wheel flats, I assume the train was working on vacuum brakes not that this was necessarily significant but I'll happily let the rumour mongers run away with discussion about that one! ;)

Another steam run ends not as planned but I don't think Dobbs0054 and all his consultants could do anything about Thre events today, totally beyond the control of the tour operator but why would wheel flats make a loco a failure?

I was wondering (and mentioned a few posts ago) what would cause them to be bad enough for a failure to be declared. The only cause I can think of is the loco sliding, and then the question is; what would cause the loco to slide badly enough to do that? The thought crossed my mind that maybe the 47 at the rear was powering at some point while the steam driver was braking, effectively pushing the braking train beyond its adhesion limit. Interesting know if any of the coaches suffered flats too.
    Pure speculation on my part
and not intended to rumour-monger, imply wrong-doing, etc.

A short shot from me of her working up towards Sapperton Tunnel, seen from a foot crossing by The Tunnel House Inn. I'd forgotten how noisy the rails are at this spot, they, near enough, over power the sound of Braunton herself!

Might be wrong but I always thought that a brake application from the train loco would cut the power to the diesel loco at the rear? Might have to pay a visit to WNXX forum for the answer ;-)

Correct. Either the Air Train Pipe Governor or the Vacuum Control Governor, depending on which brake is in use, will cause power to be cut when a brake application is made.

It's not the first time she has been removed from service with wheel flats. She missed the Solent and Sarum in May 2014 due to flats on her driving wheels. Have a look at this video right at the beginning for the probable cause as she slides into Salisbury with the Great Britain in 2014:

Has SPM's wheel lathe been modified to take wheels bigger than 1800mm then?
