The modification plan would probably be most influenced by whether a new smokebox is needed anyway because the four row superheater required about 4 inches longer than the original. A couple of 3 row engines had double chimney did they not, but the chimney was further forward?

So does this also mean we will see PW start working on the tanks at Peak rail??

Was referring to the mention of 6024 or 5029 on the TEx, apologies for ambiguity.

As the original post implies, I'm treating it as a rumour, not info. I overheard it being mentioned on the Ffestiniog last week. We'll just have to wait and see if it is a one way trip to Fudge Jct., or it actually transpires.

Well that will be a labour of love, I suspect, but very welcome news nonetheless. The main line aspiration will add quite a lot to the cost and then, of course, there is the small matter of having it fitted to run air braked trains that I would have thought would be eminently sensible.

That has to depend on what the agreement is, if its a restore and run for 10 years with peak rail funding the costs in exchange for control over each engine for the life of the ticket, then depending on what space they have in the restoration queue its got to be a maybe, if PW is funding it, then even after selling the castle will he still have enough to pay for the overhauls? his royalties from his producer days must now be a fraction of what they were, i suspect, that its going to be a restore and run agreement, same with the apprentices, that will be government grant aided if he has done it right .

From facebook postings , Tyseley wanted a GWR castle , given 7029, 7027 and 5043 were either BR Built or BR modified 5080 was restored instead of 7027 is my interpretation

Sensible to who? those who run vacuum have stated on numerous occasions why they consider it the sensible route to follow why should this be any different, has Kinlet been fitted with air which would give a eye on the owners aspirations, I would hope they will concentrate on getting her steaming in the first instance and then assess the lie of the land in the 2-3 years time that's likely to be, may be a very different landscape then, if either DBC or WCRC stop operating steam it would focus the mind and allow a decision to be taken?

Without wishing to dampen the excitement of this news, what does the future hold for 5051 and 5080, both of whose owners have other classmates they seem more interested in?

No idea but they are both in secure ownership and stored undercover. Would love to see 5051 running again as she was the castle I grew up, with going on her first runs with my dad when I was about 4 or 5 but I fully understand why the GWS only ever would want to have one castle operational so just glad she is safe.

Yeah I saw that as well at https://www.facebook.com/SharpnessRail/?fref=ts seems to contradict the suggestion up thread that she was going to Tyseley to be restored - Apologies I know nothing of the Vale of Berkeley Railway but do they have the capacity to restore something of that scale?

Air braking would be sensible as it opens doors to more bookings via operators who use DBC (something not open to 4936 as well as being a wide class 5) and vac brake operators recently found themselves removed from running twice for months as a time through no fault of their own, least if something happened to one steam TOC, the other can get you home.

I dare say Tyseley haven't forgotten about 5080, but by the time 7029 and 45593 are done, we are probably talking the best part of a decade into the future, and I'd be surprised of 5043 is just laid up when it's ticket expires if it's in good nick.
