Now the firebox has been sent away, there is a good chance 34101 will make it back next year, (once the boiler is back together, the lads at the MPD know how to reassemble a loco fairly quickly as has been proven with 80136 this year). 825 is also hoped to be back next year, so you might not have to wait very long at all! I can see another southern themed gala coming up with 926 back at the end of this year too!

Thank you for the update, Matthew. A visit to the NYMR may be on the cards sooner than I thought!

Don't want to dampen your spirits but I doubt if 34101 will be back next year. The boiler isn't due back till the middle of the year and it will come back with no stays fitted. With the best part of 1000 of them to do I reckon it will take most of the following winter to fit them. 2018 is a more likely target, and there are those who think that is more realistic for 825 as well. None of which is relevant to this year's gala, which is what the thread is about!

I'd rather like the opportunity to recreate my first experience of being on the footplate of a loco in steam one day. Had a softspot for 34101 ever since.....

The NYMR's motive power problems of recent years can largely be blamed on over optimistic overhaul completion dates and the lack of provision of additional locos, as a result. I think that 34101 was first pencilled in for the 2012 season and 80135 has been going to be available 'next year' for almost as long. I can't see either hauling trains in 2017 and I don't think 825's owners are expecting it back in traffic in 2017, either. You might get 30926 for 2017 with a fair wind.
I would like to be proved totally wrong, though.......

Apologies if I got things wrong, I was only stating what I thought were reasonably official completion dates! While there has been over optimistic overhaul completion dates, 80136 has been pretty to schedule, it was said middle of summer, and while it has not yet entered service, it looks set to in the next couple of days. There has also defiantly been a large amount of bad luck, 61264, 44806, 75029 and 61994 all might have been operational for the beginning of this year but have all had problems. Problems with the overhauls of 80135 and 34101's boilers have also been unlucky. If you look at the last month 6046 has only operated 1 day because of one problem or another, and 26010's failings have also been numerous since its arrival. We do seem to have our share of bad look even after you weigh in the factor of the intensity and scale of our operations!

If you take the official line, you probably haven't got it wrong and that is my worry. It is my perception that 80135 & 34101 won't see service in 2017, not the official view. My opinion is based on a gut feeling and not rose tinted spectacles. However, I've been around long enough to risk a king size Mars Bar on being right. (Can you still get king size Mars Bars?) Having said that, there have been significant changes on the NYMR in the last year and there is a real 'can do' attitude coming to the fore so I could well be eating humble pie.

Any idea if the Battersby run is on again? Got some freinds interested in this, but would hope its steam rather than with the 25 on it as well...

The main reason for having the Cl.25 on the Whitby end is the lack of time available for a run to Battersby. The running time is tight and there is only 7 minutes available at Battersby, not enough to allow running round. However, the Northern T/T has changes slightly and this may be advantageous, although I haven't checked.

I believe (from speaking to the NYMR GM today, so it is a plausible source!) that there may be some double-headed runs to Battersby, so perhaps some time has been found for running round.

Thats all sounding good... I can understand the need for the 25 if need be and have defended the decision of the line to use it. It does help if the steam engine is facing towards Battersby as there have been times when it faced the stock.

However, if the Battersby run is on theres a group of people I know wanting to do it...

A bit of an update, a third visitor (which will be staying till around the end of March) is coming and, afaik, the Battersby runs are still on and some may be double headed by two members of the same class.....

So, options are 76084 or another mainline Black 5, 45212, 45231 and 45305 seem the likely possible candidates, although 45212 and 76084 have both been talked of before, so would seem most likely!

Still nothing on the NYMR website about visiting loco's and time is marching on (could a mod please put the dates 30th September - 2nd October 2016 in the thread title please). Is the GW/Welsh theme mentioned earlier still a runner?
