"Leeds No.1" 865/1905 0-6-2T Hunslet built for Leeds Corporation Water Works

Hello,

I'm looking for information on "Leeds No.1", there doesn't seem to be much information on the internet about her, so I wondered if anybody on this forum knew if she was mentioned or pictured in any books or if her works photos and drawings still exist anywhere?

Hi Joe,

http://www.irsociety.co.uk/Archives/2/Russell.htm and books on Russell by both Alan Turner and Andrew Neale credits Russell's boiler and firebox to the design fitted to
"Leeds No.1" so that's one area where you'll be able to find something.

I gather the Statfold Barn Railway now holds the Hunslet archive so Henry (who posts on this forum) may be able to advise.

I think there is a photo and some info in the England volume of Humphrey Household's Narrow Gauge Railways.

 

Just to observe that this boiler/firebox unit is not the same as fitted to the version of the Sierra Leone 2-6-2T with the larger boiler. The latter, although the same diameter as the design as fitted to No.1 and "Russell" has a shorter but wider firebox and the dome in a different position. The heating surfaces are just about identical which has led to conclusions being jumped to in the past.

Have now checked - yes, p141 of "Narrow Gauge Railways - England and the Fifteen Inch" by Humphrey Household. An excellent book, well worth a read.

Lots of information and photos in:

Lesser Railways of the Yorkshire Dales and the Dam Builders in the Age of Steam, by Harold Bowtell pub Plateway Press 1991. Now out of print but available second-hand and well worth having - as are the others in the series!

Pretty sure she was also featured in an early issue of the Narrow Gauge Railway Society's magazine - I'll see if I can dig it out.

Anyone thinking of a replica new-build of Leeds No 1???

 

"Russell", a close relative. is still with us. No. 1 had to be altered owing to a propensity to overturn, which is something which would need very careful examination.

"The Narrow Gauge" 189 Summer 2005 (not as early as I thought!). Detailed article by Ron Redman, lots of photos - and scale drawing! I considered modelling her a year or two before drawing was available but ending up doing Sittingbourne's "Superior"!

Lawson Little of the NGRS might be able to help with a copy.

7mm on a Lima diesel shunter chassis! Think there's a drawing of Superior in the Oakwood Whipsnade book. Too big for my current layout, now have to make do with GVT and Alford and Sutton tram locos.......

That's correct Paul.

The only components in common between Russell and the SLR locomotives were the driving wheels, screw reverser unit, springs, axleboxes, coupling and connecting rods, pistons and slidebars.

Boiler, cylinders, smokebox, cab, tanks, brakegear, pony trucks, chimney and frames are different.

Have just come across this post whilst doing some research on a very faded photo of Leeds No 1 I have just acquired (I'd guess from about the start of the last century but could be wrong). There is one person standing in front of the loco on the right and another looking out from the footplate on the left. I'm not sure if it's the same as the one in the book referred to but thought you may be interested.
