    That's not correct.

'ellenbee pioneer' is Roger, whereas 'TheEngineer' is Andy. Two very different users.

We read that Lyn will have running-in trials at Porthmadog. She will of course fit the WHR loading gauge, but is it known whether she'll fit the FfR loading gauge? If I recall, Lyd had to be slightly cut down at the cab corners to fit.

This question was also asked word for word on the L&BR's Yahoo email group. The railway's Chairman has responded there stating "Do not believe such rubbish! - Peter"

Difficult to know which part of the original message that Peter thinks is rubbish?! Running-in in North Wales, or Lyd's cab corners.....

When I spoke to Peter about this some time ago he said that 'LYN' would be run in on the L&BR first of all as they wanted members to be able to crew her on her travels, that said as I also understand that she will be going to WHR at some point which has yet to be confirmed, but like other locos she will have a certain train only open to those who have help pay for her.

As far as I know there has been some discussion about LYN and LYD double heading at some stage, but details have yet to be worked out.

I would doubt if Lyn would fit the FR loading gauge as she is to wide and tail, but she will fit the WHR loading gauge.

Re the piece in the info above about the truck swinging when the engine was lifted, surely it has some sort of spring side control to the trucks? To guide the coupled wheels round curves.

I am surprised by some of the serious snags reported in this and previous lyn formations. Surely if the loco has been designed in CAD things such as clearances could have been trial fitted in the PC first. The modifications to the tank to fit the grease nipples is something I might have to do on my current project being made largely without plans but surely not on a 250K project such as this. It does look a bit amateurish. Or are you being more honest than other projects?

That's a little harsh Mr. C! Most of the corrections required are not a direct result of poor CAD design, more a consequence of defining the human/loco interface which can easily be overlooked at the CAD stage. I would call none of the modifications as a "serious" snag, just a snag. For those of us involved in previous new builds, an over-run of just six weeks would be amazing! I am willing to wage that the final piping up may add even further time to that required, not to mention "an abusing of the Queen's English"!

MrC . Nobody expects a 'perfect fit' first time, (although it would be nice!) and other new-builds have also had problems. Even the original builders had 'off days', such as the Tasmanian Garratt K1, reputed to have been assembled with the wheelsets the wrong way round...

I have rebuilt, restored and built from new plenty, as I suggested in my original post The point I was making was surely with CAD the point is that you should expect a perfect fit everytime especially with something as fundamental as a reach rod tunnel. Lyn is not a restoration or a rebuild, it is a brand new locomotive built and designed in the 21st century. It is not being made by me with the odd plan on the back of an envelope like my current loco project!

And Weltrol, thank you, you have answered my question regarding their honesty. I wish them well in resolving all the issues and I am looking forward to paying to see the loco at the L&B hopefully this year. Is there recourse to the builders of the tanks to get the modifications required done without cost to the project?
