6201 returning to mainline this year.

Cam past Tys on the way home from a night shift. Too see 6201 happily blowing off down in the steam trust.

 

I notice that Lizzie has now been replaced as loco for Steam Dreams 19 July trip, was there more to the Derby failure than was reported and where is she now?

UK steam now showing 6201 as engine for Steam Dreams trip on 23/8/16 as "first trip since overhaul?" No up to date info showing on 6201's website, but then they have never kept their members or the general public or come to think of it the railway press, up to date with things, as many ex members have said "treated like mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed on ....

 

Reported as such in Railway Herald, a bit odd so soon after overhaul, but it was showing typical 'Stanier disease' on the test videos.

Talking to some guys in the west shed the other day and it appears it is not having a full valve and piston exam, merely just the right outside valve had been removed to sort a lubrication problem out with the rear valve spindle.....
Apparently she is ready to go again, but there are a few issue aside from the loco to be sorted first.

 

According to RH there will be 'mileage accumulation' before 6201 returns both at the MRC and followed by 1 or more runs around the Sheffield circle. I've got to say I was surprised that 6201 was put up for mainline work with just 2 Tyseley to Stratford runs under its wheels - that can't be much more than 80 miles in total.

 

I think David Smith's quote in issue 456 of Steam Railway is very relevant in this case, "we tell everybody, that we won't book an engine until it's completely running and has been proven"

 

It's fortunate that airliners aren't maintained in the same manner.

Can you imagine the horror of a Jumbo jet crash with hundreds of fatalities and the reaction from the airline was ''The airliner had been out of service for months for maintenance. All that has been concentrated on were the engines. The undercarriage, fuselage and wings were done under maintenance in the last running stint''.

The situation with the locomotive at present is not due to the Tyseley workshops. They would only carry out work that they were contracted to do.

Let's hope that the necessary work on 6201 is carried out shortly and we can enjoy the sight and sound of Lizzy on the main line once again. <BJ>

 

Think you'll find that's exactly what they do do. Different components have different maintenance lives, and are replaced according to the schedule.

 

Noting his occupation however, I would hazard a guess that BJ is very much versed in aircraft maintenance...

 

Anyone have any information on a test train for Lizzie? SD are confidently advertising her from 23rd August, less than a fortnight away so I guess a full test train is imminent? nothing on their website or Faceache sites..

 

Test runs are on Wed 17 August.

Very interesting article in Steam Railway 462, regarding its short lived main line return, and what has happened since coming back, facts not previously made public in the railway press, lots of questions now for the controlling group, just where does it go from here and at what cost?
