It is a bit rich of some TOC's to say charters get in the way then they are very often out of path due to said TOC's trains not being on the correct bit of track at the correct time.

There is indeed Tony. If you carry on walking along the footpath where I am, it leads to the tunnel mouth. It's quite hilly to get to the tunnel mouth, but worth it if you're filming in good conditions.

In fairness to the promoter, it's the remit of the TOC to decide what needs to be provided operationally. I believe there is another pacific going over Whiteball this weekend - that trip may highlight a different approach for those interested in such things.

Tornado is about to haul 12 coaches unassisted over Whiteball this morning.

The only thing that is likely to push the train from the rear is a tail wind. <BJ>

This is what keeps me off mainline tours. Why could the diesel driver just keep his hands off the throttle?

I ventured out to see steam and diesels in my own little railway world!!

It seems that virtually all SD tours now have a Diesel pushing.....more so than RTC who also use WCRC. I have no idea why there should be this disparity but it would totally prevent me from booking with SD.

Agree. I haven't booked with them for some years now for that very reason. RTC seem to be more aware of the need for pure steam wherever possible and are more floexible with bookings

I think it is worth repeating that since the RAIB report, I believe that WCRC has tightened safeguards around vacuum and air brake stock. If a set of coaches is not completely dual braked then there are additional risks if a train has to be rescued when operating on vacuum because of the probable lack of local motive power to do so. So in some instances there is an operational need to take a diesel with the train. Yes, it could shadow, that is, if a path is available. My understanding is that not all the Steam Dreams set is dual braked. Until that is resolved, you get what you get with their trips. Forewarned is forearmed.

I hope that the above is not misinformation for which I apologise in advance, if it is, but there is a pattern here for us all to see. Whether this should have been foreseen back down the line is another matter, of course.

Fair comment...but then Steam Dreams should be up front and notify people that this will happen. Until they 1) adopt a more honest and transparent policy and 2) there is a reasonable chance of unassisted steam on their tours then I shall not book with them.

Not sure that really washes with regard to Vac Braking, since VT still seem to go some distance from Tyseley without a tail gunner.

Not that SD ever gets my custom anyway since they don't believe in life north of Oxford it seems.

Vintage run shorter trains. Does that make a difference?

Less chance of stalling on a gradient I suppose, but does it make any difference to probability of loco problems ?, in any case the new NR load limits are supposed to stop people pushing their luck on said gradients.

As well as the operable pool, there's plenty of other Mk1/2 stock at Tyseley that used for spares/awaiting restoration, add in the Air Con coaches that are not always on site I'd say VT prob own nearer 20 coaches.
