After watching 4mt 76084's riveting test run on Tuesday and having liked what I have seen of 73050, 73082 are there any plans for any of the Standard 5's to go Mainline? I know that 73096 has done some mainline runs before but there hasn't been much talk about her since she went into storage at Southall?(is that where she is currently?) I would also like to know a little bit more about the status of 73156 at the Great Central Railway. Thanks to anyone.

73096 is at Carnforth I think (or still at Southall) and I think it's planned to eventually overhaul her again for the mainline again which would be great.

73156 has had its boiler out of frames tested recently as well so hopefully won't be too far away.

I think it's safe to say that it's very unlikely 73050 will appear mainline unless there is a considerable change of heart from Peterborough City Council (who own her) and the NVR. She's due to go for overhaul once 92 squadron is out of the workshops, and is intended to become one of the NVR's mainstays. There's also the amount of £150,000 contributed by the City Council towards her overhaul to act as an amasador within the Peterborough area. Certainly in her last ticket the City Council wern't keen on her leaving Peterborough.

The Loughborough Standard has passed her out of frames test a couple of weeks ago and when talking to one of the shed volunteers down there last weekend they were expecting the tender tank back earlier this week. Their hope is to get her up and running in the first half of next year, hopefully by Easter (obviously with the usual caveats). As far as I am aware, there are no plans to mainline her.

73096 is probably the only member of the Class that will return to the ML in the future. It's all gone a bit quiet about her future since she left the MHR. Last I heard she was at Southall but not sure if she is even there anymore after the WCRC incidents this year.
We nearly had the prospect of another Standard Class Five on the ML when Bert Hitchen was alive as he wanted to buy one to operate on the ML after selling 34027 (Can't remember which one it was though; either 73129 or 73156 I think) However, the owners of the loco wouldn't sell her and he bought 45231 instead.

It was 73129 Bert discussed a restore and run deal with Derby City Council which owns it. IIRC the MRC decided to accelerate the overhaul so DCC left it with them and Bert took 45231 on loan from GCR then eventually bought it having overhauled it already.
Not sure what overhaul plans there are for the Caprotti 5.

Sure the plans are to overhaul it (eventually - wouldn't expect the council to be keen on funding this) but haven't heard anything about it going mainline. One I'd certainly like to see / hear being put through its paces.

I think that 73082 is an integral part of the Bluebell lineup and I completely agree about it being there to operate trains. There is no denying the versatility of this particular class of loco though.

Pretty sure she hasn't made it back to Carnforth unless it was by road, of the locomotives owner by Mr Bunch I think Bodmin is at Carnforth although no idea as to how the overhaul is progressing with 35018 taking longer than expected plus their wider workload. Equally 34073 is there although what actually remains is not clear, there is a Bulleid boiler outside that is visible from the WCML if you know when to look through the gap in the stock.

It would be good to see 73096 back on the main line again one day. It was a very impressive and capable performer.

As an aside, I've got a rather unusual reason for having a special spot for 73096. One Saturday I took a picture of it (admittedly on the Mid Hants rahter than on the main line) and then travelled back to attend a friend's birthday party in the evening where I met the girl who is now my wife!

That is really good news about the progress being made on 73156. Sounds like reassembly is well on its way. Would asking for a picture to be posted be too much? Hope to see it on the Mail train that GCR have. I think it would be a good mainline candidate. It is up to the owners and what they want to do though and I respect that.

73156 ran regularly on the GCR in BR days, it could hardly be more at home where it is.

I think one of the national mags currently in the WHS reading room has a photo of the boiler being tested.

73096 was indeed a very capable mainline performer and often was the mainstay of Steam dreams tours because at the time Bodmin and Canpac were not availible, i dont know what facilities are availible now at Southall so would either be waiting for space at Carnforth, or may even be already stripped down, it will need a boiler lift, but the boiler work done on its last overhaul was very major , so hopefully it shouldnt need so much this time round, ,infact both bodmin and the standards boilers were done to such a high standard that it was expected that both boilers should be good for 2 further tickets, i should imagine the bottom end should also be good, as it did have an intermediate overhaul i think at the 5 year mark, if i had to take a guess, i think with Tangmere's firebox needing replacement, 35018 will i assume take her place, and 73096 returning in a couple of years , assuming JB has the funds to overhaul it, but having sold Bodmin, i would think he already has the money in the bank .

I believe Bodmin needs a new inner firebox, I was told that the crownsheet certainly needs replacing. 73096 though has a boiler in pretty decent knick I believe.

Now thats interesting, those of us at Ropley at the time, were told that both engines boilers were good for 20 years, i remember that when the 5's boiler came back it needed a lot of work to bring it up to the standard that Andy expected, i believe both were done by chatham steam ,

A bit off topic but I wouldn't mind seeing a BR 75XXX on the main line. I'm led to believe once they were fitted with double chimnley they became a very capable loco. I've seen film of them working the Southampton boat train out of Waterloo and looked to be going like the clappers along the main line.

75069 was another very well thought of engine during its main line spell in double chimney form they were said to be equal to a lightwieght pacific,

David Wardale seems to suggest that a 5MT could do the job of a Merchant Navy but was much easier on the fireperson (of gender)

34016 boiler was done at Pridhams in Lamerton. Half way through its mainline certificate it had part of the inner firebox below the firedoor replaced by Andy and the team at Ropley. Tony Wood posted video of the work when he used to run the MHR website. The loco was withdrawn from traffic early because of concerns over pitting in the inner firebox. It certainly didn't make it to the full 10 years of ticket.

Your not wrong though when you said about the 20 year expectation of the boiler being good, I remember hearing that myself at the time that the boiler arrived back at Ropley from the contractors.
