    Spot on I would say.
As I have mentioned before, if the will and means coincided progress could be made but sadly this is a very remote possibility.

You could build up the running rails through P & C work to the same height as the check rails. That would work!:)

    7. Mods to 'Shoot down in flames' the poor wide eyed individual who wonders why no-one has started a thread where the combined mighty knowledge that is Nat Pres..(which makes even that Chris off Eggheads look like a befuddled half-wit) can be brought to bear on this seemingly insurmountable and yet grossly unreasonable problem..... ? and then move it to the combined 9f thread.

Plain line curves may not be a real problem. It is the low speed turnouts where tight radius is combined with crossings that would be more difficult. Perhaps some kind soul would sponsor a computer simulation to see whether the actual engineering modification would be worth a try. If that could be achieved and tested in the real on a heritage line we would have made progress. I just have a feeling that it would only work with gauge widening too great to be comfortable.

I wonder how many of these now exist on the national network? Very few on the main lines, I would think and with most steam era sidings and depots swept away these would have been the main place where they would have been found. So, the question must be how much of a theoretical problem this is.

So where would this man line only beast be modified, stored and maintained?

Why can't the 9Fs just be left on the long list of locos that just don't go on the national network?

I think it's fair to say that tight curves do not necessarily pose a problem just for 2-10-0s. If I remember rightly there was a real issue over the access to the Autokumpu steel works in Sheffield when she visited the plant.[/QUOTE]

I think that is exactly what will happen. But it is ironic that this has happened to one of the most modern designs, and the last to be built. This possibly explains why so many people seem to think there 'must' be a solution.

    Because it's defeatism by inertia.
