The other possibility could be it's 34073 ready to go onto Bodmin. 34073s boiler came off the frames years ago and would certainly speed Bodmins overhaul up having a prepared boiler.

Spamcan may correct me, but I understand she will be thru piped with a brake valve in the cab so she can run with the continental stock with another loco supplying air. Santa specials run top and tailed with a class 14 and 7 continental coaches.

That's just how we're going about it. Same arrangement as when we did the Santas first time round. It's a clever bit of kit, when the driver applies the brake the valve sorts out the steam, vacuum and air braking to the relevant parts of the train.

    A Thingy...
Just finished a drive and fire on 34027 at the SLL shareholders week on the SVR. Suffice to say, my firing was rather poor, but it still produced steam for my fellow shareholder driver - eventually!

Driving (and stopping) proved reasonably easy, although it was all due to excellent advice (and patience) from the duty SVR crew member.

As my previous attempt was on Rocket, it was very much a different experience, and I'll need to work on my 'firehole fling'. It would also help if a lorry hadn't overturned on the M6, which ensured my journey from York almost resulted in me missing my trip.

Thanks go to all concerned on the SVR and with SLL.

A somewhat more sobering thought and a rather sad one. Given the partial disassembly of Tangmere and the general absence of any action on her, is it possible that we may be close to losing an unrebuilt on the main line? In which case, I wonder if City of Wells may venture out one day.

If money can be raised and Ian Riley can have some involvement based on where 34092 is located right now I think she would be a winner. Especially with the class 7 shortage we have now. That's just my 2 cents though.

Generally speaking, not sure mainline holds the same attraction these days for owners of locos that can earn a crust off the network.
Agree it would be a shame if 34067 was the last of its type to work on the mainline.

A lovely atmospheric shot. Hopefully anyone who is impartial will agree that these light Pacifics make for a distinctive look especially when taken close to head on, as you have. But with that distinctiveness comes all the baggage of their quirkiness, maintenance demands and the necessary skills needed to get the best out of them. And, as the name implies, they are rather light on their feet. Therein lie the problems of using them on the main line when, for example, something like a Britannia poses fewer difficulties and can do a similar job, better even.

Wasn't there some talk a while back that Mr Hosking would like to buy a flat top?

He most certainly would like a flat top in his collection. He made an offer for at least one that I know of.
