This week a new tender tank has arrived at Ropley and has been placed on the tender frames that will one day go behind 35005. Also the tender frames for 34007 are now in Ropley yard and have also been turned the correct way up.

l think you'll find that the loco is the wrong colour for 'Works Grey' and the shade is slightly too pale. Honestly some people just have no idea about the correct liveries...

With the tender merry go round is this tender top going to end up behind Can Pac also, if i remember wasnt Wadebridge running with the tender originally intended for 35005? now i know Swanage has its own tender, and there is sets of parts at both Ropley and Alton for another tender, so what engine does have what, and then you have 34058 again, are some parts around going to become the tender for that, I'm confused

I'm confused, wasn't that last tender tank a new one, ex-Jeremy Hosking?

34007 originally used the tender loaned from 34039 when first restored and ran with it for a few years until 2011.
It then swapped with the tender from 35005 for a few years, until the MHR did a swap deal with Jeremy Hosking that involved 35005`s going to Bury to run with 35027.
35027`s refurbished tender came south and ran with 34007 until the locomotive was withdrawn from traffic earlier this year.

Although the ex 35027 tender was in good condition generally the tank was not and so a new body with increased water capacity was ordered and this is what has been fitted this week, this tender will then be fitted to 35005 once its overhaul is complete.

Regarding the other Bulleid tenders at the MHR:
34105 has its own tender that is ex 35025 with a newly rebuilt body.
34007`s tender chassis is now in Ropley yard in preparation for its next stage of construction including the fitment of completed BFB wheelsets and brake components prior to the tank that is stored at Alton being lifted onto the chassis.
34058 tender is I believe a kit of parts, however I did hear that the chassis has been assembled up to a point, but I am unsure of its whereabouts at the current time.

I assume the tender left the Avon Valley at the same time as the rest of the loco?

34028 would probably be it, as its overhaul has been contracted out to Tyseley.

Southern Locos reported in their October news round up that the tender frames of 34028 had been restored and moved offsite to await delivery of a new tank. So I guess it depends on the condition of the frames at Tyseley.

Eddystone's bottom-end overhaul (principally the axle boxes) has been contracted to Tyseley, who recently did the same job to 80104. The boiler is at Buckfastlegh awaiting overhaul. This permits SLL to focus on completing 257 Squadron's overhaul, for which the boiler returned in October, and gathering components for Sidmouth. 80104 had its cylinders lined at Swanage recently, and is now getting a coat of paint before re-entering traffic. http://www.southern-locomotives.co.uk/News/news.html

Taken from the blue star website (http://www.besps.org/Progress01.htm)

The Life and Times of a Bulleid 5000 Gallon Tender Tank

12 Months ago, we were contacted by the Mid Hants Railway, to see if we could give a home to a redundant Bulleid Tender Tank. Intrigued to see what was on offer a visit was arranged to Ropley, Hampshire. On arrival we were surprised that the Tank was in use behind their ‘West Country Class’ Loco ‘Wadebridge’ that was due to be withdrawn, needing a 10 year Boiler overhaul. It was then explained that the Tender was destined for use with their ‘Merchant Navy’ Canadian Pacific, which was undergoing a complete overhaul with help from the National Lottery, and as part of this process a replacement tank was being built with increased water capacity.

At a subsequent Committee Meeting its was decided (providing it did not divert too much in the way of Funds or Manpower from the restoration of 45293, and it was identical to the Tank on the Tender (No.3120) originally paired with our own Merchant Navy ‘Blue Star’) we would be able to make use of it. After further discussions regarding Timings and Transport, the Tank was delivered to our Base at the CVR this November.

Good to know the group are still collecting bits for it. Wonder if the new cylinder casting will cost less now polystyrene patterns have entered the picture?

It's hard to know given that no one builds just one outside cylinder. The LMS Patriot however did a costing during its funding appeal and stated that a new cylinder would cost a total of £7,000 to create a pattern and then cast it.

I quite agree. The owning group does not often make the headlines (although the website does get updated about three times a year) and we do know that 45293 is taking priority over 35010 - understandably so as it must be the simpler restoration project of the two.

This means that a fully-restored Blue Star is a long, long way off, but even if progress is slow and likely to remain that way for some time, it's good to be reminded from time to time that little things are happening and that the loco isn't being neglected.

Do you know if that was costed with a poly pattern or a wooden one?

Was a poly pattern the savings were huge

This is also why retro-converting GSN is actually possible compared to the attempt in the 80s/90s with America Holland line.
