Agreed. What happened to the day trip to Salisbury returning via the Portsmouth Direct? And the answer is that the outbound journey is not long enough to serve a full breakfast after the last boarding point - i.e. Woking. So what can drive the day is the need to cater in a leisurely manner. There is little point in having this whole catering team on board if you cannot provide two decent meals on the journey.

Tail wagging the dog? Maybe, but I digress.

Yes as Al says its become tail wagging dog except for Vintage who are able to be a bit more sensible as they tend to stick to well tried itineraries and have the benefit of REG. Shortening the day with more time at the destination is one of the reasons why the AI Trust are going for 90 mph running with converted MK3 stock which will incorporate a REG. For me now anything up north means a 20 hour day even if its possible. The time isn't too far distant when I wont want to do this any more. Its one of the reasons why I have booked on Saturdays trip even though it will have a DL on the back. A nice short day.

On time so far and the only time I have heard the DL was at Netley bridge restriction where we nearly stalled so DL pushed. Standard class at back and lots of spare seats. Foul weather

My footage from today, as 34052 accelerates through Swanwick on the Fareham-Southampton line.

Nice one James. Fame at last for my wife who can be seen far right taking her video in the rain. We were in the buffet car eight coaches back and the train was doing 43 mph at that point having made a good climb on the 1 in 100/70 out of Fareham with no DL assistance. The full story of the day will be in Heritage Railway 223 out on 15th December.

Does anyone have any idea how long it will be before 34046 gets her proper id back?

Don't shoot the messenger John, but I believe I read in a magazine recently (Steam Beano?) that she'd go back to being 34046 in time for her first run of 2017.

Don't worry, James. If your source turns out not to be accurate, I won't criticise you! I hope you're right, however. As someone not keen on false loco identities, my fear was that, as the real 34052 lasted until the end of Southern steam whereas 34046 was withdrawn in 1965, we might be stuck with the impostor right through to the 50th anniversary specials in July.

I read in one of the Mags (Railway Mag IIRC) that the MHR are after her for their End of Southern Steam Gala and she may appear as 34052 for the event.
