Have you still got a tender to build for this loco?

Yes. Tere are a couple of other BR standards without tenders I think. But BR MK1 tenders have been 'New built' already so Pattern sharing or even joint ordering is possible...

As previously stated, this is the last of the major components required for main frame assembly to start. Some of the parts in stock will require machining before they can be assembled - methods of achieving the machining are actively being pursued at the moment. This principally involves the three major castings for the base of the frame, plus the skimming of the pressed horizontal and vertical stretchers to ensure the correct fit. After that it is a question of fasteners to put it all together - some 700 in total, 350 per side. We are currently in discussion with our VAB about the correct method to use, and the grade of materials that will be needed to ensure a perfect frame at the end of the process.

As you say, all components were finally moved north, with most being in secure storage in the Midlands, while the actual mainframe plates and some of the stretchers are with Ian Riley. All frame components will be moved to Riley's in due time.

The only parts not currently at either of these locations are the cab structure, and the smokebox. Both of these may usually be found at Quorn Station on the GCR, though occasionally they are moved for display elsewhere, as was the case last weekend when the cab was to be found at Fawley Hill, at the invitation of our Patron, The Hon. Sir William McAlpine. It will return to Quorn later this week, having been the centre of a fundraising campaign, the results of which I await with great anticipation.

As is pointed out elsewhere in this thread we do indeed require a tender for the locomotive. To this end an appeal has been launched to start the fundraising for this essential item - this is The Tenner for the Tender appeal, and donations to this appeal, or indeed any other would be more than welcome.

    Current appeals are:
    Tenner for the Tender
    Get the Wheels 'n' Motion
    Buy a Bag of Bolts

The last is aimed at raising frame assembly costs, and a Bag of Bolts is costed at £25.

We already have someone who has placed a standing order for the Wheels 'n' Motion appeal, which is most generous. Other donations have also been forthcoming.

Donations for the tender are being made, though I am unsure at the moment how much has currently been raised.

If anyone would like to donate to any of the appeals, or better still become a member of the project, please either visit our website for details https://www.theclanproject.org/ or contact us by post at THE 'CLAN` PROJECT, P.O.BOX 295, ST AUSTELL, PL25 9FG. If sending cheques to this address, please make them payable to The Standard Steam Locomotive Company Limited. Any donation, no matter how small, will be welcome.

Think that covers most points raised - apologies for the long reply - I could have made it much longer than this! but if anyone wants further details, please do not hesitate to ask. I, or one of the other team members will always be pleased to answer queries of any kind.

Thanks for the reply Bob, I look forward to seeing her take shape, I have to admit that I don't have a great deal of money currently (as I am unemployed) and to be honest what money I can spare or fund raise is going to the one narrow gauge loco I have wanted to see all my life and that is the Lynton and Barnstaple 762 club's LYN Loco, it is hope that she will be running this time next year. Once she is up and running I will make a donation to this cause as well, I think it would be fantastic to see or better still to be hauled by this loco on a rail tour.

    Regards

    Colin

How's the "Bag o' Bolts" appeal going, and how much more money is needed to reach the target goal?

    Hi Aron
The bag of bolts appeal is going very well. We are nearly half way through in terms of bolts sold. Bolts can be bought either as sets or individually.
The appeal can be found at www.theclanproject.org/bag-of-bolts

    Best regards

I am very pleased to see that the 2017 AGM is arranged and that we can make travel arrangements in good time. Looking forward to seeing the minutes/report of 2016 AGM. The slow and steady progress is very encouraging.

    3D Frame 1st image.jpg

3D printer model of the frames of Hengist. All of this exists in steel, and is almost ready to be assembled. We also have the motion brackets, which are not shown on this model.
    new-frames.jpg

This one of the frame side plates, in the metal. Going to be so impressive once this is all assembled. I can hardly wait for the process to start...

How much do you expect the loco to cost in the end? Around 3 million or more?

How is the fundraising going? I notice from previous years accounts that you raised 24k more last year than the previous but that was due to a VAT return of 24k and that actual fundraising hadn't really increased at all. 64k is a nice amount to get in a year but unless fundraising really ramps up or a significant donor can be found will this eventually fall? If say out of that 64k only 50 goes on the loco and you need to raise 3 million that's 30 years more funding needed. Not knowing the average age of your donors are they likely to still be contributing in 30 years? I would love to see a Clan steam but I'm interested in how you plan to step up the fundraising to enable you to achieve your goals.

Perhaps Gav. you might be invited to give a talk on this aspect sometime as your question is valid and very much on the minds of those involved. It would be interesting to work out what Patriot has actually cost as the Clan will be a very similar figure ( less one cylinder/ plus one trailing truck)
From my perspective I have seen the Clan project evolve into a competent organisation that is close to completing its first Major Milestone (completed frames) only a few years on from nearly disappearing disappearing altogether ( Poorly executed frame plates, several carrier bags of drawings and a shipping container of odds and sods (as it turns out £100,000's plus worth of) a Cab and an unfinished smokebox). Fortunately the now group has a small posse of experienced engineers, some skilled and committed admin staff, first class financial management and some tireless and committed Public facing people and some well connected faces on the management team. What it doesn't have is much by way of marketers...

I Think about two years back a very conscious decision was made to focus on getting the frames finished and this year the visible activity (and spending) has caught up with the planning ( and income).
My belief is that the group felt the need to complete something very tangible and impressive to be able to sell ( assembled frames with potentially the full face of the locomotive and a cab) before allowing too much spend to go on marketing but as this part turns the corner into the home straight things need to change / are already changing...

Thank you. Question. The accounts of The Standard Steam Locomotive Company Ltd (note, no "The" on the website) at Companies House just show a cash balance, no fixed assets as one might expect, as there seem to be a number of pieces of hardware around. Any explanation? Seems strange to expense what would normally be viewed as fixed assets. Also, the concept of having some trustees who are not directors, and trustees who are, and a chairman who is neither a director or a trustee, is interesting. Is that because certain persons who are considered to be valuable to the project are not willing to take on the legal responsibilities of a director? The annual report to the Charities Commission refers to a Council of Management and a Management Committee. Is this the same entity or are there two bodies?

Believe that the council of Management and committee are the same, as for the rest - Pass. I couldn't tell you off the top of my head but im sure on of the Cof M can answer your queries properly...perhaps you might PM Clan Hengist ?

The words Directors and Trustees haven't I recall ever been used by the Clan Project/ SSloco I couldn't even tell you who they are ( but I think I could hazard a guess). The Current chairman is relatively new whose appointment would have been official as of only a few weeks ago...

it is definitely THE though. Is it the wrong company you are looking up ?

Mike, Riley's have been involved with this project for quite a few years now and have been extremely helpful in all that time.
With regard to the previous comment about the value of big bits of metal, I suspect that whilst we can spend thousands of pounds of hard won donations on a vital part, until it is actually part of a proper assembly, it is purely a lump of metal.
This may answer a previous query from 'huocemi' about the accounts as well.
If I read the Articles correctly, 'if the charity fail then their assets cannot be sold but must be donated to another charity of a similar/appropriate cause', therefore they are worthless.
I think it is great that we are actually going to see these frames erected, at last. Surely we can raise the last finance before the work is done, or does the money have to be up front?

The latest news regarding the frame assembly is now available on our website. This represents a significant step towards having the frames assembled. To cut costs and improve accuracy it has been decided that the frame extensions and rear dragbox will also be completed and assembled at the same time.
The latest news is available at https://www.theclanproject.org/news.

It is good to see the latest progress/planning on the project. I appreciate that the work involved is simply bringing forward the next step, but it is a shame that the assembly of this major part of our 'dream' is being delayed further. How long will it take to acquire the finance and then the parts to enable this assembly to happen? I hope that the patience of our supporters and donors will last.

The extra delay is only due to engineering lead times. The frame extensions are already on stock and the drag box is the only component that requires completion. As planning evolved the manufacture of the drag box was brought forward. The extra funding is to fund the dragbox fabrication.
