Not entirely correct I'm afraid Patrick. The plan is to commence the overhaul late in 2017 whenever the loco is withdrawn. The overhaul is expected to last two years & if that timescale is achieved the loco will return to the SVR for early season 2020. Whilst a major part of the funding is already in place an appeal will be launched to ensure on time and debt free completion of this work.

This is only possible because of the dedicated input of the owning group whose current website is here: http://www.erlestokemanorfund.co.uk/

A new website will be launched very shortly and new supporters are very welcome on all fronts!

Fantastic news, thanks for posting. I know with 7802's overhaul there was some assistance from Tyseley to get the loco turned around quicker, hopefully a similar arrangement will help again.

The article says 80,000 miles, quite impressive!

Detailed mileage records were not published in SVR News for the years 2005-2012 but 2012-15 were 7,579, 9,329 and 7,725 (SVR Wiki).

Now over 100,000 preservation era miles with only 18,000 pre 2008. Despite being rescued in 1973, 7812 will be hard pressed to catch up its sister, 7802 which is already over 10,000 ahead of that. 7802's rescue was in 1979.

I read that new cylinders are going to be cast for a Hall
Could this casting be used for other GWR loco's ?

Churchward and Collett 2 cylinder locos had the half saddle cast in with the cylinder so,while the 18 1/2" dia x 30" stroke is common to other classes (e.g. 28xx), they are not interchangeable due to, for instance, differences in saddle height. So, in a word, probably not.
When the GWS converted Maindy Hall into a Saint they cast new, inside steampipe, cylinders so presumably 4942's were retained as spares for 5900. I assume that the group restoring Hagley Hall explored the possibility of obtaining these but were unsuccessful.

34053 Sir Keith Park returning to Swanage next year.
    http://www.svrlive.com/34053-sir-keith-park

With Erlestoke Manor out and 75069 back, I assume the plan is to make do with 7 rather than 8 to cover the main services until 42968 is finished?

Perhaps decision is more Swanage orientated as they have found themselves short of locos this year? She will be missed, certainly an impressive loco.

The article says that it is the SVR which has chosen not to renew

It actually states that the decision not to take up the 2 year rolling renewal is a mutual decision made between the SVR and SLL....
The availability of the home fleet is in a much better place now than when skip was first brought in, though I think we will be one "large loco" short of the ideal fleet size come the end of the year. The time for renewal may have come a few months earlier than would be ideal for the SVR, with the Stanier mogul not due back until the end of 2018, though as noted already our need is lesser than the Swanage at the moment.

At the moment, yes indeed. Manston was due to run until July 2018 while 30053 bows out later this year and 31874 won't be ready quite as quickly as initially hoped. 34053 will therefore be quite useful in early 2018 at Swanage, but the plan is to turn Manston round pretty quickly while the SLL website expressed a hope that Eddystone would return to service at some point during 2018. I'd be surprised if the Swanage Railway wanted to run four Bulleids, so I would guess that if the SVR fancies giving a home to another SLL machine at some point in the future, it would at least be a possibility

I did try to choose my words carefully! Due to my work situation I spent three years living in Gloucestershire before returning to Sussex two years ago and during my "exile" away from the Southern, I enjoyed travelling up to the Severn Valley where the sight of 34053 helped assuage my homesickness - not to mention the visits of 34007, 31806 and 30120 during this period. I do appreciate your point of view, however. The SVR we all - including yours truly - have come to love over the years is epitomised by Manors, Prairie and Pannier tanks, not Bulleid Pacifics. Still, I think you're stuck with 34027 for the time being, not to mention ex-Dover, Stewarts Lane, Bournemouth Nine Elms and Eastleigh-based 75069, although at least this engine has in its favour that it began life at the nerve centre of the GWR. :)

For me, growing up in the preservation era, one of the SVR's great strengths and attractions has been it's variety in rolling stock, both locomotives and carriage and wagon. The joy of a full teak train behind the marquess was for me as enjoyable as a Manor on a rake of collets, 1450 on an auto or even 2857 with a rake of gw wagons, so I can only agree so far with the pining for our "great Western cross country route". Of course it is important that we look to the route's history and look to run appropriate sets where possible, but times have moved on and we have an opportunity to represent a wider swathe of railway history than that which applied just to our own 16 miles.
