I wish I could follow on from Hampshire Unit's superb nocturnal shot with my picture of the 34081/34007 double-header on the Bluebell, but it's a print and I don't have access to a scanner. Apart from the lack of the white lining on the smokebox doors and commemorative headboard, running in low sunlight, (it was one of the last northbound trains to run on 20th October 2007) it came as near to anything I've seen to evoking the spirit of the famous 34006/34057 double header over the S&D. Ironically, if my memory serves me rightly, there had been a problem wth one of the Bulleids earlier and this double-header was actually an impromptu arrangement and not in the WTT. Perhaps Mr Spamcan 81 could enlighten us?

Covering the locos in horse dung probably wouldn't do too much harm either, but the big question is why do something silly?

2007. Had a very good charter with '81 and '07. Perfect weather.

I've always been under the impression that the S&D pairing was planned from the outset.

I have found the gala leaflet and it was planned, but on an earlier train due to depart SP at 2.35pm.

That was it! It's all coming back to me now. I can't remember what time the "replacement" double header did run, but it was a lot later than that as the sun was getting low in the sky.

I think we many be at cross purposes. I was on about the S&D pairing back in 1966 on the final day of services.

how about asking the national railway museum if you can switch the identity of 34070 manston to 34051 winston churchill and you get 34046 as 34052 and then add in 34053 and run all three consectutive numbered ones on a triple header,

Not dropping a hint, but by the time of the gala Swanage could only need to renumber one visitor to get three consecutively numbered, with the home fleet in their true identities.

Why would you want to run a triple header apart from the novelty value keep to single locos more noise.

I do sort of agree with that point, but maybe as some sort of Beer ex train it could be a thought. Or maybe top and tail with 2 rebuilds one end and 2 originals the other? The pair on the other end as a dead weight would make the other 2 working cough a bit
