Does any kind soul know if water is taken at Hereford outbound please? The link to the timings on uksteaminfo does not work at the moment.

    Thanks

    46118

Edit: RTT shows Hereford as 11-01 to 11-29, and platform 1, so probably is a water stop.
Two engines and 12 coaches will be too long for that platform and block entry to platform 2 for any southbound services.

Have things changed there? 61306 did a Cardiff last year and no box involved at all.

The train is two locos plus 11 coaches. No doubt they will know how to park the train for water......
Yes. I believe that the Penarth Triangle is not available to WCRC so the train has to be pulled back to Maindee to turn.

Hopefully the fives will be allowed to take the whole train up Colwall and Llanvihangel tomorrow on their own, a combined weight of seven coaches each shouldn't be to much of an issue. I guess if a lot of time is dropped the driver of the diesel will be put to work.

34067 managed 11 up there in 2013 alone, so apart from a brief shove if things are slow leaving Malvern, I think Colwall can be done by the pair. I'd say the Lickey is 60-40 in favour of some shovage due to the standing start, but we won't know what will happen on the day. Still looking forward to it.

I also believe that Arriva Trains (at Canton) are not being as helpful as one might wish. Anyway I gather that WCRC has been forced into doing something that it would prefer not to do and we have to live with the consequences.

Those percentage will prove to be wrong, I'm sorry to say. On the Lickey, bank (pardon the pun!!) on 100% shovage. Have you seen how steep it is up there? You are

I am what? 1 in 37 for two miles is steep, but as I said, it is what it is. 100% shovage means that there will be absolutely no work up front whatsoever. Looking at videos of 9466, it gives me hope that the steam will be doing about 60% of the work, if not more.

100% shoveage doesn't mean that at all because a 47 probably couldn't push a 640 ton train up you (11 coaches plus 2*125 ton engines).

What a patronising post. If the TOC had those concerns they should have had them when the train was requested and told the promoter that a steam hauled train on the route was not possible. We know that the issues are only Colwall and the Lickey and we did the Chester run over the Marches with 12 last week. Llanvihangel from a standing start is far worse than Malvern to Colwall. The diesel IS the problem if the load is only 11. At least WCRC could have sent it to Cardiff so the outward would have been proper steam.

Just seen the ECS leaving Rugby, 47 on the front piloting the 5's.

Sorry to be apparently patronising but when you suggest that it would be a good idea for the diesel to be turned off, as you did in #49, you clearly have no idea of the potential for there to be problems with effectively two Class 5s and 14+ on the drawbar. This is leaf fall season and whilst I know that it is theoretically possible for that kind of load to be carried unassisted with two locos, except on The Lickey, it is just plain daft not to have the diesel powered up and on idle, rather than dead, just in case.

I see you have also segued into suggesting that the diesel should go down on its own. Now you know that apart from GB trips, that seldom happens. There's no reason to presume that this would happen on this trip. As for the late change of plan, I've no idea when WCRC was told about the Cardiff problems but I'm prepared to bet that it wasn't when the trip was first advertised and neither was it when the proposal was put in by WCRC. I imagine it was at the point that NR actually started to path the trip and the shunt moves - i.e. quite recently.

So when you post something that is not sensible, as this time, please don't expect it to slip by unchallenged. I share your views about diesels on steam charters but I am also pragmatic enough to know when common sense has to come ahead of the ideal scenario. Anyway, don't worry; unless I am mistaken you are not on this one; I am, so it doesn't concern you.

    Changed it back for you.
Just for your info, I'm on a Facebook group for 34B, 34C and 34D personnel and friends. There's a thread about the Cambridge Buffet and even the diesel drivers refer to boxes - in this case the Class 40.

Good news. Only 10 up plus diesel. This is possible without help. Don't know about Lickey though.
