How often does it happen though? There has been reference to one such incident elsewhere this year but how regular is it?

Not sure HST's use buckeye's between vehicles, it is pretty rare but does happen every so often with freight trains.

The train would have come to a stop as the brakes would have come on automatically as part of their fail safe design. The aftermath would have been a tad interesting though.

Edit : not good though if someone had been walking through the gangway when it split.

The Cross Country HST separation near Bristol was due to a fitter forgetting to replace the locking split pin on the nut that held the buckeye in place.

I don't think anybody could/can predict a failed coupling,( if that is what has happened) it can happen anytime anywhere. I feel for all the folk who have had their pre Christmas day out ruined (as well as the expense of getting to and from KX).
I certainly wouldn't fancy trailing round London all day fighting the crowds of Christmas shoppers

Just a bit! It was reportedly split between a TSO and RMB.

Farce? What a strange choice of words. You clearly have inside information about the chain of events that led to this cancellation. Please enlighten me c/o P2 at KGX.

Speaking as someone who has just spent the last 4 hours travelling to KGX and back because I was supposed to be travelling on this trip I certainly don't plan to be out of pocket for this.... RTC are due to be contacting all passengers tomorrow, something I await with interest.

It will play out better if the cause turns out to have been reasonably preventable because if it is not a foreseeable or manageable issue it will bring further pressure on the use of heritage stock.

Can't see that. The focus will surely be on WCRC's Maintenance Regime and the daily exams on the stock.

If this was a DBC operation, I doubt many people would be getting out their pram like they're now because it's a WCR gig !

My point being if the risk cannot be managed out because it is a product of the age of the machinery then it will invite further scrutiny as to whether the stock should be allowed on the network.
If WC or its maintenance company shows good records but an isolated human error that is much easier to put preventive measures in place. As in the case of the XC incident which was a fitter error. No long term impact on the operation.

No more than with any other TOC, I suggest. As someone directly affected I have already moved on both physically and metaphorically from today. It would probably be good if others do the same rather than pick over the entrails of this incident.

I've never known a passenger train part due to coupling failure , I've seen on several occasions coaches uncoupled but the corridor connection clips not undone , what a mess this makes when the vehicles are parted Loose coupled goods trains splitting , yes ,this was mainly due to drivers not taking up the slack care fully. Are not all passenger vehicles buckie coupled now. ?.This stopped coaches telescoping in a collision ,the cause of many causalities in rail accidents years ago.

What is likely to be affect on runs in the near future? I'm sure we are all thinking that.

Platform 2 at King's Cross was a sad place this morning, especially for those who were still hoping to visit the Lindum Fayre - and why not; it is massive - and were told that they would have, of course, to buy separate tickets via normal services. And then there were those who had bought advance tickets to get them home from King's Cross and Peterborough who were now faced with discarding those and buying a new ticket at whatever the walk-on rate is today. It's the financial consequence of today's unexpected problem. You have to feel sorry for people who will actually have paid more for tickets (and possibly accommodation) than the trip itself. A refund of the charter ticket (that I assume is coming our way) will only compensate in part for the real cost of today.

Happened immediately ahead of me in the late 1960s in the Mirfield area. Standing at the front of the rear 'portion' looking ahead to the front bit, that was quite a distance ahead was different! We were thrashing along at a good speed behind I think a Black 5 on a SO summer holiday service. There was a swift inspection by the crew, the front reversed back and recoupled and off we went as if nothing had happened! I recall being annoyed that those in the front got slightly more mileage than me. On reflection, we may have been not far from Healey Mills, so engineering help may have been almost on site?

Fifteen trains cancelled at Kensington Olympia this morning according to RTT.

Interesting thread on WNXX about what looks to have happened to the coupling.
