I am visiting the West Highland extension next week, after an absence of nearly 20 years (boy, does time fly!) and was wondering whether anyone can recommend any good locations to photograph the train.

Looking at some old videos and pictures, I am particularly interested in the west end of Loch Eilt and the Little Church at Lochialort. How do you get to these locations?

I have visited the Glenfinnan viaduct area, and as long as my memory isn't playing tricks with me, I hope to visit this area again next week.

Also, am I right in the assumption that they still work boiler-first from Fort William, and return tender-first. There was talk of turntables being installed, but I don't think this has occurred. Is this correct?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank You.

Not done the Loch Eilt shot in question, but we did the Church shot about a week ago...

    Polnish Church
    Map: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?...ghland+[Station]&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf

On that map look for the main road, on the right hand side of the map you can see a yellow road, this is the road you require. Simply go down there and you will easily see the shot. The road isn't used much so parking is available on the side of the road.

An example: http://www.steamingaroundyorkshire.co.uk/Pages/2011/June/23rd.htm (3rd Shot down)

If you want any other advice on locations we did the other week just let us know...

All the engines up there at the moment all face smokebox towards Mallaig.

The Loch Eilt shot is a very very long walk across the hill sides

Thanks guys for all your help. I will let you know how my trip goes.

The weather forecast is not very helpful, but there is nothing I can do about that!!!

You never know, it may make the pictures quite moody!!!

    Cheers!

If we're talking about the causeway shot, I'll wager that 99.9% of those who do it take the much shorter "unofficial" route.

Ahem, no idea what you mean Ian!

61994 out today on Jacobite as booked. Sounded very nice climbing up Beasdale. 45231 left FW this morning engine and coach for Dumbarton for tomorrow's charter to Oban. Shame the forecast is so poor this week, win some lose some.

Hi Ben. For a preview go to: https://www.bing.com/mapspreview and enter "Glenfinnan". When the map appears you will get a map menu on the right side. click on "Ordnance Survey" and adjust the scale (upwards) until a 1:50,000 OS map appears. Follow the railway west from Glenfinnan until you see "Loch Eilt". You can scale up from that map to a 1:25,000. However, when you get to Fort William you will find lots of tourist information. You can get the train to Glenfinnan or Lochailort and probably get a bus to anywhere on the A830.
