I can't see blue being a problem. It's authentic for the loco, it goes with Maroon coaches OK and it matches the 03, 25 and 104.

I agree that the Tfl livery, whilst fun, doesn't match anything so any BR colour should represent an improvement to most, regardless of their stance on Green vs Blue vs Other Liveries.

Whoops, livery froth, I'm guilty as charged!!! :-D

Might be an idea to speak to the 20 loco association, it is their engine! Also I can't see it taking up permenant residence in Norfolk, not with mainline ticketed 20's being worth a their weight in gold at the mo.

IIRC 20227 was going to be repainted into BR Blue after Easter weekend (where it would have run alongside Met 1 at MRB). However as it failed, the time was spent repairing it rather than repainting.

Hands up to liking the idea of a pre BR Blue NNR (I'd forgotten about the 25 and never see the 03), especially considering how much BR Blue there is over at Dereham, however I am always grateful that we get to see, ride on, etc this stock and I would certainly never presume to try to tell people how to paint their own engines or coaches. Oh! and regarding the 104, despite the fact I think they look best in green I quite like the idea of a blue 104 for nostalgic reasons, having grown up in Acle with the Yarmouth line at the bottom of the garden in the late 70s to early 80s when the stock was mainly 104s and 105s in BR Blue. Come to think of it there was the odd double headed blue 25 on a summer Saturday 'til they lifted the Wensum curve (I know it is back). I do prefer some locos in blue rather than green though

Ok, obvious question, why was the J15 painted green with the number '561'?

Was painted pseudo GNR green for the BBC in June 1980 for the TV adaptation of D H Lawernce's 'Sons & Lovers'. At the same time the Quads were given false clerestories. A lot of damage was done by both particularly to the Quads. The BBC were supposed to reprint the J15 afterwards but it never happened. It was repainted in LNER black the following spring.

Thanks for accurately dating my photo. I guessed 1979-80 by how old I looked. I wonder if it was my 7th birthday in June 1980. I certainly had at least 1 birthday at the NNR pre high school

Thanks for these. I look forward to reading them. As well as searching out your updates on the 104 trailer. Is the plan to bring down a powercar once you've got the trailer up and running?

All being well, yes. It's a small team working on the project so we're only able to handle one vehicle at a time. Things can (and do) happen a lot faster within the sphere of the main C&W department. The Suburban project for example would probably have taken approx 20 years had it not been for the resources and funding that were made available specially for them.

If only greeny had been saved for the NNR I could have relived my youth. I think there was talk of it being preserved but I suspect a certain fireproof substance put paid to that at the time

Yes very few 105's survive for that reason. The blue stuff has also been a MAJOR headache for the three vehicles that did actually make it into preservation. Thankfully, as of about 3 or 4 years ago, all of the preserved examples are now completely free of the stuff, which certainly improves their long term chances.

Sorry Nat, only just seen it. It does seem to be staying till the New Year, but after that, who knows.

The class 20 paint job is nothing to do with the railway, being privately owned, so if it does happen, it's their choice.

No worries Joe. Any timescale for starting on the 25 or a scope of work been thought out for it yet?

Would there ever be a possibility of the M&GN Society or the NNR acquiring another ex BR steam locomotive?

I realise that the home fleet is healthy at the moment, but what if a locomotive with a strong East Anglian connection came on the market (and I realise there is not many of them about)? Also, with the possibilty of a display shed in the future, could a larger fleet perhaps be kept undercover, and on public display, whilst awaiting overhaul?

It would appear that the NRM is relatively sanguine about letting exhibits go (the NSR loco it has "sold" to the NSR assocaition). Might it be possible for some lobbying to get the J17, E4 and J69 relocated to the railway? I am alos given to understand that the EARM are not disposed to recondition the N7 as it is too big for them and their members feel that they should not invest resources into a loco that spends all its time away from the Museum. Perhaps another candidate?

If the display shed does become a reality, I think the J17 would be a great static exhibit.

WIBN maybe, but the E4 2-4-0 working in East Anglia would be a great way to spend a Lottery win. Can we persuade a Premiership star player, or a hedge fund wallah to become an enthusiast?
