How you can spend around an hour doing the 49 miles between Carlton and Peterborough or the 25 miles between Stevenage and Finsbury Park with no scheduled stops in between is way beyond my powers of comprehension. To those on the trip, do enjoy the respective average 49mph and 25mph trundles!

Easy. Follow a Moorgate all stations stopper and that's just what it's doing.

It's this sort of situation where making the 75MPH limit a little less black and white could be useful, a short sprint towards 90MPH could potentially save an hour, im not suggesting pathing continously at such speeds, but short sections to help out pathing headaches.

That departure is convenient as there is also a northbound path around that time. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see it not far off right time into York although whether the punters like standing around waiting for it to arrive having got up before dawn is another matter. I also see that RTT has gone quiet at present over the train's location.

Duchess slipped to a stand attempting Hertford loop flyover, currently awaiting assistance from the 47 which we left at KX

Was the Hertford Loop part of the plan? Timings suggest not. Maybe the re-routing is because of the late start. Either way it looks like diesel support to and from York now. All very curious and unhelpful if the train had to attempt the flyover from a standing start at Alexandra Palace on a wet rail. Perhaps not the best decision by NR.

The rerouting was due to wires being down, though that route has now reopened. However, we're still waiting

We've just been informed that there's a problem with the diesel, which now hasn't to be detached, and we'll shortly be on our way up the main line as originally planned

Oh my gosh, whomever is writing the script at the moment for steam hauled tours is having a right laugh. Fingers crossed today's tours now continue without further incident.

It would have helped had the diesel been kept on the rear - BUT then Steam haulage mustn't come with rear end diesels as the passengers will get upset !!

Now tell me which is the greater upset - a diesel on the rear or a delayed running train ?

Diesel on the back for me. It seems amazing the a Class 8 can slip to a standstill and not get going. How steep is that part of the route?

Possibly the same loco, (my memory is not what it was, it was Sutherland or Hamilton) but it slipped to a stand trying to get out of Leeds (Copley Hill area) a number of years ago. I stood and watched for a long time.........set back, hand sand, slip again, set back, hand sand, and so it went on. Eventually it did find it's feet and get away much to the relief of the hand sanders who worked a miracle climbing aboard a moving train
