34081 overhaul progress

On the cosmetic front the tender is now almost completely undercoated so the top coat will be going on soon.

 

Time flies, seems like only yesterday I saw pics of her being taken to bits, all the same looks good, best of luck with her return to action.

 

It does indeed, especially when the clock on the boiler ticket is ticking away.

 

More good progress this weekend. Most of the conduit to serve the electric lights is now installed and both left and right exhausts have now been fitted.

The main steam pipe from the Klinger valve to the manifold in the cab is now in position.


And the first sections of the casing are being checked for a correct fit.

Seriously though, looks very good and a credit to those who have put the work in!

 

What a beautiful sight! A real credit to all concerned. (Now put it in a glass case well away from coal, water, grease and dust and finger marks-only kidding!)

 

All joking aside, the shunter drew her out of the shed this morning. It's just a warming fire today and we'll do a preliminary steam test to satisfy ourselves/reveal any slight snags before the insurance inspector attends for the official in frames exam.

 

And not forgetting those who have raised the money to keep the job on track.

 

Cracking job there - the society should be proud of the latest overhaul. Hope the steam test goes well.

In fairness the support functionaries rarely get the credit they deserve yet without them the project would be more difficult to complete. Look forward to seeing it in action on NVR; is there any intent to operate on the main line or is that an expense too far ?

 

Couldn't agree with you more. Some people even within our own organisation are quick to say "well done" to those who do the physical work but seldom give praise to those who raise the money and attend to the paperwork that is needed to ensure such a project remains viable. As for main line running - an expense too far I'm afraid. We've already had several requests for visits to other heritage lines so she will be seen in other parts of the country. To be fair to our NVR hosts, these visits will be spread out over the next few seasons. Would be bad form to spend more time away on other lines than at our home railway.

 

Stunning! Well done to all involved. Great to see her back in steam again. Will she be venturing South next year for the SR Anniversary events?

That's the new 2nd "tender" (without its side-sheets) which can be used for departing Victoria etc.

 

One of my most vivid memories of visiting railways when I was fairly small (age 10ish....) Was visiting Wansford and seeing 34081 partially clad in the shed with 1306 nearly next to it and 'Britannia' sat cooling down in the yard.

Seeing the photos has brought back some nice memories

Hells teeth Ian that's a magnificent looking bit of kit. Top marks to ALL who have contributed skill, time, hard graft and most of all cash to be able to turn something like that out. It must give all an immense amount of satisfaction
