I heard that the WSR asked for the 47 to assist the Hall to MD but WCRC wanted lots of extra money for this to happen, so WSR decided to provide their own diesel assistance!

A Hall on its own plus 10 on the WSR would have been tricky. Such a pity that the whole journey involved a measure of tail end activity at different points on the journey.

I was surprised that 53808 was not used - it would not have needed the diesel. Instead it was working the Santa Expresses.

Very unlikely as there would probably have been several crew changes during the day.

Having watched your video, it did sound in dire need of some work.

Challenging, too damn right! I arrived just before Dowding and stood within a few feet of you. Decided not to bother trying to do a video so just stood there watching her go by.
Makes a change from watching the action on a small screen:).

In normal conditions more than capable. But given that the Williton-Blue Anchor section in particular hasn't seen trains over it for some time, contaminated rail head conditions at this time of year would have been an issue for any locomotive, so a prudent move I think.

    All rather nice, thank you.

Some of the footage indicates that there is quite a visibility problem with a rebuilt as well as an unrebuilt

Well, fog is an equal-opportunities visibility problem, yes. ;)

More seriously, although the rebuilds are as prone to having the exhaust hugging the boiler top as any large engine with a soft exhaust when running fast, you don't tend to see them with a smokescreen curling all the way down the casing side as Tangmere occasionally demonstrates.
