Some weeks ago I posed the question about whether the free calendar that was given away in the January issue of The Railway Magazine had been missed by readers.

Those that did respond provided an overwhelming vote of ‘yes’, and it is with great pleasure to announce that bagged with the January 2008 issue, published on DECEMBER 5, will be a free calendar, in a style akin to previous ones.

Now before I get replies on how you’d have preferred more pages, better paper, glossy cover, etc, you need to be aware that unfortunately, our budget surplus alone would not have been enough to fund these kind of improvements. But at least you have got something for free !!!!

While I accept a calendar may not be everyone’s cup of tea, I am receptive to suggestions you may have for other free gifts, ether by private message through this forum or email to chris_milner@ipcmedia.com but not posted publicly. Can’t have our competitors pinching the ideas !

There are some interesting developments under discussion for 2008/9, but the suggestion from readers of what might be preferred as a freebe is always a worthwhile consideration.

    Thanks

I'll look forward to the calender which neatly fitted my available wall space. Last year had to make do with a non-railway orientated wall chart, had to fold it in two to get it in!

Are you planning any more free DVDs in 2008?

Those 2 last year were excellent, and the calendar too.

    More please !

    Er, yes.

That I can only apologise again. The producer was told verbally and by email that it HAD to be removed, as part of a package of changes, and agreed.

It wasn't and we only found out when the DVDs were pressed and a spare box arrived in the office. Appropriate action has been taken. Like you, Virgin weren't best pleased either.

It was the only sour note of the charity Pendolino run really.

Sometimes it isnt realised that all magazines are at the mercy of third parties - printers, the distribution chain, DVD producers, outworkers who bag and stick things on covers, etc - no matter what we do to produce a good issue.

Thats very true, and at the end of the day whether accidental or someone having a mischievous streak to them, all sorts can appear that you don't want when you can't have direct control.

I didn't take offence, at the end of the day its just part of the shop floor language of the job, though I'm not sure if you normally do it in front of the TI! or on a PR event!
