Indeed. In the latest report on construction of Beachy Head, there is discussion of the handrail stand-offs, which are attached to the boiler and carry the handrail support knobs. There are three different designs, on account of the varying diameters of the firebox and the two boiler barrel rings, such that the handrails themselves (which are hollow to carry control rods for the blower and air pump valves) can run perfectly straight. And after all that work to produce and affix the stands, they will end up buried under the layers of boiler lagging and cladding and no-one will ever see them ... Building a new loco - even if you just concentrate on the mechanical, and ignore areas such as fundraising - seems to be about 90% unseen work interspersed with occasional flurries of dramatic visual progress.

AIUI the reason for the SVR's restriction is based on water capacity. I guess this relates to the 82000's capacity being 1,500 gallons, whereas for comparison 4566's and the 5700 class panniers are, I believe, 1,300 and 1,230 gallons respectively.

A nice surprise short visit from some of the Patriot lads today, checking up to see if the Monday gang were taking the Bank Holiday off !

Hope you all enjoyed looking over 82045 in all her icy glory, and had an exciting and enjoyable day out on the SVR.

I'm guessing it was Kevin West, his partner Jo and Andy Collinson?? I was supposed to be with them but unfortunately got called into work.

We always have a look at 82045 when we visit at Galas etc. She is coming on so well now. Hopefully it's not long before a group of the newbuilds start to appear, 82045 being one of the most advanced.

More than just three or four Patriot people, some might even call their group size impressive - wouldn't have left much sitting space in 'The Railwayman's'.

It was good to see them, share some of the pains, pride and excitement of building from new, commiserate about the shortcomings of some suppliers and the brilliance of others, exchange information and have a general quick inspection of 82045. I never cease to be amazed at the dedication, optimism, 'can do' attitude and enthusiasm of those involved in the New build world. Long may it continue.

A Gala consisting of New Builds is something to look forward too, and what a few days that will be !

Well said. You are very right in the can do attitude of people in newbuilds. There is a lot of enthusiasm generated in them. And a newbuild gala is going to happen at somepoint and I personally hope it happens at the SVR (because 5551 can go with the LMS rake obviously!!) You would imagine that by 2020 there might be enough running to do that with the big 5 all represented. Saint and Grange for GWR(I think the county said around 2021) Patriot from the LMS, Atlantic from SR and either Tornado or maybe even the G5 from the east, and of course 82045 from BR.

One of our directors once wanted the newbuild groups to all get together and have a mini convention about how each group has gone about its business to help each other out which might be beneficial to all groups. There is a good bit of banter between all of us and as you said, were not short on enthusiasm (or should I call it stupidity)
