NR and NR (think about that one) might regard it as a loss leader to get publicity about the forthcoming reopening.

Personally I think the S&C is too long for 'Jacobite' type operation... 160 mile round trip from Hellifield compared with say 80 miles? Plus the extra crew, a shunt at Carlisle and a long journey time for families. I think running to Appleby is ideal. I often got off their when I was younger rather than Carlisle, and if the Eden Valley Railway became established, it would even more attractive, for me at least :)

Think the border is at Hellifield, S&C coming under Network Rail North West?

Think you are right because the Waverleys and Dalesmans in 2015 had steam on at Hellifield when WC was non grata over the border.

The S&C has been shuttled between both parties during this century - and before. I think it depends on when the line was in each domain - and the personalities in negotiation at the time. I believe that Carlisle - Appleby comes under Carlisle NR control whereas - as noted - Leeds - Hellifield comes under Leeds NR control.

Yes, I've seen how well loaded these trains can be, and that needs to be factored in when calculating the extra seating needed for enthusiasts.

Not quite a public service but a few years back, the Royal Train with Duchess of Sutherland in charge, stopped at Settle to pick up. Not sure but I think it was Charles.

    Edit, it was this,

On 22 March 2005 Duchess of Sutherland again hauled the Royal Train, the second time for a steam locomotive in 40 years, transporting the Prince of Wales from Settle to Carlisle over the Settle-Carlisle Railway. The trip marked the 25th anniversary of the formation of the "Friends of the Settle and Carlisle" pressure group. On the trip, the Prince spent a 15-minute spell behind the controls of the locomotive.

Thanks Ralph. And public service? I haven't trawled through Six Bells Jct, but I wonder if all those CMEs were Hellifield to Appleby non-stop. I did have a look at Keith Widdowson's fascinating but exhausting book Riding Yorkshire's Final Steam Trains. He documents a run behind a Thames Clyde Express relief, the 0956 from Glasgow to St Pancras on 29/8/67 with 70004 on 8 coaches from Carlisle to Leeds. This train did stop at Settle. Any advance on that?

I remember RTC's Sunday York - Carlisle trains used to regularly call at Settle. If you check UK Steam's archives you will find that this last happened in 2011 as far as I can see. A very frustrating stop when you wanted a bit of a run at the bank.

For accuracy I understand the problem with the building at Hellifield relates to building regulations issues not planning.

Is it due to the proposed usage? The engineering arm, CRRES, registered office is Hellifield according to Companies House.
The site belongs to a charity does it not?
The partial building put up is not very sympathetic with its surroundings but maybe it will gain a better looking exterior when completed?

    From http://www.hellifield.org.uk/www.hellifield.org.uk/Planning_History_1989-2012.html : -

1996 application number 42/149/b Hellifield Parish

Full planning permission for the erection of engine shed and adjacent heritage and visitor centre and use of land for associated uses and car parking. Application implemented mid 1999 with the erection of a steel frame for this building. However, the structure erected so does not meet building regulations, the applicant has succesfully been prosecuted however NO remedial works have been undertaken and to this date there is no further progress on this building (within the Settle Carlisle Conservation Area) In the interim period an existing mound which formed part of the landscaping for the approved scheme has been removed and the contours of the land no longer reflect the approved permission.

It would be nice if they could use the LSL MK2 set, although very unlikely.

In other words the developer is putting up two fingers at the Planning and Building Control Authority. That sort of practice gets one nowhere.

Or alternatively the Council should just grow a pair and do something about it (apologies I have a project where before our time some potentially unauthorised works were completed - and the Council keep raising it as an issue yet are doing nothing to actually take the matter forward), equally FWIW we don't know whether the developer was let down by a contractor on building regs issues and that may still be rumbkling along?

Isn't this the point where correspondents start getting very agitated by promoters not being honest about the potential for a diesel in the consist? ;)

FWIW I would suspect the trains will be happily rammed although having seen the interface between normal passengers and enthusiasts on the Cumbrian Coast class 37 service trains I will give them a miss as at times it is frankly embarrassing. Incidentally has anyone considered that this may be a further method for northern to provide much needed capacity via historic stock? :D

The early morning and late evening positioning trains from/to Appleby are probably the best bet for riding. Book yourself a B&B in Appleby?
