There seems to be some confusion here?, the problem with 60103 in the early days of testing / running-in last year was the air pump itself...it didnt work!, (not overhauled by Rileys I might add) 45407 and indeed a diesel at times were used to provide the air for 60103, the lead locomotive to do the braking on both the locomotives and stock.

On the sensible premise stated by the WC supremo "we never book an engine until it is proven", with 46115 having had some serious work .......

Good point, would have been happy to, but no one asked !

No longer relevant as someone with access to realtimetrains has linked above

Thanks for your correction Ian ! I confess my confusion, especially as not being mechanically minded, but this was my understanding from lineside discussions.

May I ask - in that case - whether the failure of an air-pump on a steam locomotive during main line operations could be resolved by a trailing diesel with air-brakes relocating to immediately behind the steam locomotive or would that cause operational / technical problems leading to the steam locomotive being declared a "failure" ?

IIRC, this has happened at least once in the past. 71000's air pump failed one Whitsun bank holiday and an EWS 67 was marshaled immediately behind the tender to provide air to the brakes. The destination was Plymouth, and there were red faces all round when the train stalled on Dainton and it took rather a long time to "re-boot" the diesel so that it could provide assistance...

A bit of extra information about Saturday's trip that I don't think has been mentioned so far. Ticket details suggest that the train will be a load of 10 including POB - i.e. less than the Jubilee had to handle last week. So on the face of it this should be a straightforward load for a Class 7, and dare I suggest, a potentially quick assault of Shap. I'll let you know what transpires.

I guess if the work on 46115 wasn't too heavy there shouldn't be the need for a minder.

If an air brake capable locomotive is in the consist, it does not matter where it is marshalled as the steam loco will take its air supply from the reservoir (yellow) air pipe coupling, the air being provided by the donor locomotive, in this way the Steam is not a failure.

No reason to believe not, it is probably just waiting in a queue.

If I understood the original post by Fred correctly his concern was air braked sets needing a diesel to supply the train brake if the steam loco is not fitted with a pump etc. Is this configuration permissible if the steam loco has a train pipe and brake valve?

There is a very strong rational argument for taking a diesel as a precautionary measure and I would be surprised if WC took any risk with 46115 after a major mechanical repair.

Wasn't there something about the pump must be attached to the loco? 35028 being the only exception - https://www.clan-line.org.uk/air-brakes/. Essentially a diesel loco creating the air supply would surly be no different to the pump being on the tender???
